Let’s take a closer look at the betting line for the Big Ten Conference matchup between Indiana and Minnesota. Is the dog the right team to back with your NCAA Basketball picks in this spot, or can the Hoosiers cover the 6.5 points?

The Minnesota Golden Gophers haven’t covered the college basketball odds in six February games, but they’ll suit up as home underdogs for the first time this season against the Indiana Hoosiers Tuesday night.

Covering the number

The Indiana Hoosiers have won and covered the spread in its last four games since suffering a loss to Illinois on Feb. 7, including a 72-68 victory over the Michigan State Spartans as one-point road underdogs a week ago.

The Hoosiers are 5-1 against the spread (ATS) this month, while they’ve gotten the cash in four of seven true road games during the 2012-13 NCAA basketball season.

Free falling

Minnesota has compiled a dismal 3-8 record since dropping an 88-81 decision to Indiana as eight-point road underdogs on Jan. 12, which includes combining to score just 96 points in a pair of road losses to Ohio State and Iowa over the last nine days.

Conference numbers
The Golden Gophers are 4-16-1 ATS in February the last two-plus seasons, with the UNDER going 15-6 in that situation.

There’s no doubt that the Big Ten is the strongest conference nationally, which is certainly represented in the Hoosiers being 7-7 ATS on the year versus their fellow league members.

Tuesday night’s host is 6-7-1 ATS versus conference foes, while the UNDER is 9-5 in that situation.

Facing top-ranked competition

College basketball handicappers will find that the Golden Gophers are 3-18 all time when matching up with the top-ranked team in the country, with all three wins coming on their home floor.  Minnesota has dropped all six of its games in this situation when matching up with Indiana.

The program has dropped all four games versus top-10 teams this season—failing to cover the number by an average of 7.5 points per game.

I’m going to recommend that readers back the Golden Gophers as one of their NCAA basketball picks, as they land as a home underdog for the first time this season, while the Hoosiers are 0-2-1 ATS in their last three tries as road favorites of 3.5 to 6 points.
