Florida Gators vs Florida State Seminoles

Florida and Florida State will play their annual rivalry game on Sunday afternoon in Tallahassee at 4:00 PM ET. The last 3 games between these in-state rivals have been decided by 2 points or less. Florida State has won the last 2 meetings and includes last year’s 2-point win in Gainesville.

At the time of this writing, Florida State is a 3.5-point favorite, and there’s a total of 149.5 according to college basketball betting odds at When it comes to top-rated betting sites, BetOnline is among the elite.

Strength of Schedule Favors Gators

The #21 Florida Gators have played a strong non-conference schedule thus far, and today’s game will just add to that list of quality opponents they’ve already faced. Florida is currently 7-2, and their lone defeats came at #5 Duke by 10, and by 5 to #8 Gonzaga. Furthermore, here we are in the second week of December, and Florida has yet to play a home game. The Gators have played 8 games on a neutral floor in addition to 1 true road game. They’ve also had quality wins over Miami-Florida by 9, Seton Hall by 5, and St. Bonaventure by 7.

Pedal to the Medal for Seminoles

Florida State has exhibited an exciting and entertaining brand of basketball to start this 2016-2017 college basketball campaign. The Seminoles are averaging 90.3 points scored per game, shooting 52.4% from the field, and have converted on a stellar 38.2% of its 3-point attempts on their way to a 9-1 start. They’ve also been stout defensively as well, holding their 10 opponents to a combined 36.2% shooting, and allowing them to convert on just 28.0% of its 3-point attempts.

Contrary to Florida, the Seminoles have played 7 of their first 10 games at home. Their lone defeat came by 3-points in an upset loss as a 10.0-point favorite versus Temple. Florida State is a perfect 7-0 at home, and have won by a massive 28.2 points per game.

Final Analysis and Pick

When it’s all said, and done, I firmly believe Florida is more suited for a deep NCAA Tournament run compared to Florida State. However, I don’t like the Gators in this spot. An early season grind of constant travel and the constant pressure of facing strong competition while doing so is bound to catch up with them at some point. I’m going with the small home favorite for one of my Sunday college basketball predictions.
