The college basketball season is just getting started, and sharp professional sports handicappers like Ross Benjamin are one step ahead. Join us in reading Ross’ betting preview on Sunday’s game between Colorado State and Stanford, concluding with a NCAA basketball pick.

Colorado State Rams vs Stanford Cardinal

A couple of unbeaten teams will square off in a Sunday non-conference game when Stanford host Colorado State. The opening tip from Maples Pavilion in Palo Alto, California is slated for 6:00 PM ET. This will be the first meeting between these schools on the hardwood since 2011.

At the time of this writing (11/19), the college basketball betting odds at has Stanford as a 14.5, and there’s a total of 149.0. Bookmaker is presently offering new customers 50% cash bonuses on all initial deposits of up to $300.

Unimpressive 2-0 for Rams

The Colorado State Rams may have won their first 2 games, but they did so in uninspiring fashion. They opened with a non-lined home win over Fort Lewis 84-75. Quite frankly, that game shouldn’t even be close considering the level of competition, and certainly sent up a red flag. They followed it up with a narrow 64-61 home win over New Mexico State and failed to cover as a 6.0-point favorite.

This is an inexperienced Colorado State team that returned just 1 starter from a season ago. The Rams shot a horrible 37.6% during its 2 wins and went a pathetic 6-33 (18.2%) from beyond the 3-point line. Their saving grace in those 2 contests was offensive rebounding and free throw shooting. Colorado State gathered in a combined 31 offensive rebounds and went an excellent 54-65 (83.1%) from the charity stripe.

Great Start for Cardinal

Stanford has begun the season by going 3-0 SU&ATS. Their victories have come over Harvard, Weber State, and CS-Northridge. Stanford’s average victory margin in those contests was 18.3 points per game. As opposed to Sunday’s opponent, Stanford is a veteran laden team which returned 4 starters from last year’s 15-15 squad. Colorado State will have a difficult time dominating the offensive glass against a Stanford team which has been a +9 rebound per game differential thus far and allowed opponents just a combined 24 offensive rebounds in 3 outings. The Cardinal shot a stellar 47.6% in its 3 wins, and have averaged a massive 32 free throws attempts per game.

Final Opinion and Pick

Stanford’s experience advantage over Colorado State will play a vital role in the outcome of this game. Although it’s still early, the Cardinal appear to be a much better team than a season ago, and one that will enter this game with a boatload of confidence. The poor shooting of Colorado State will catch up with them on Sunday as they step up in class for the first time. I hate laying this big a number when making my college basketball picks. However, it’s the logical choice.
