NCAA Basketball Picks: UC Irvine +4.5
Best Line Offered: at Heritage

The UC Irvine Anteaters and Hawaii Rainbow Warriors collide at the Stan Sheriff Center, with the hosts favored across the NCAA basketball odds board, anywhere from -4 to -4.5 on the spread depending on your choice sportsbook. Both sides come into this game sporting hot streaks, prompting a near even split in consensus betting polls with 45% of spread tickets going towards UC Irvine and 55% of spread tickets going towards Hawaii and setting up a rather intriguing clash altogether on the court and the sports betting floor.

UC Irvine (18-6, 7-1 Big West)
The Anteaters bounced back form a 76-60 loss to UCSB by beating Cal Poly 78-72 on Wednesday, a win that has UC Irvine improving to 8-2 SU in their last ten games. Indeed, the loss to UCSB came as a bit of a surprise, seeing as UC Irvine were the 8-point favorites on the NCAAB odds board. It also snapped a seven-game winning streak. But the return to form against Cal Poly as the 2-point faves couldn’t have come at a better time, before this highly anticipated date with top of the conference Hawaii.

Overall, the Anteaters are 18-6 SU and 11-10-1 ATS, which includes a 7-1 SU mark and a 6-2 ATS mark in Big West action. It’s a solid season underscored by a 4.8-point winning margin and a negative 0.6-point differential versus the spread overall.

On their travels, the Anteaters are solid too with a 7-3 SU record, which includes a 0.7-point losing margin on average and plus 0.6-point differential versus the spread. That margin is skewed slightly by their hefty 78-53 loss to Kansas on December 29. They are just 5-5 ATS on the road though.

As away underdogs, the Anteaters are just 2-3 SU and ATS with a negative 7.2-point losing margin and a negative 0.2-point differential versus the spread. In Conference games, though, they are 7-1 SU and 6-2 ATS with a 7.9-point winning margin and a plus 0.9 point differential versus the spread.

Hawaii (18-3, 7-1 Big West)
With top spot in the conference practically on the line, the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors have a slight edge with home advantage. As a result, odds makers hang the hosts on a favorable 4-to-4.5-point spread across the board.

Underscoring this favorable outlook is a run of ten wins in their last eleven games; the lone loss came a fortnight ago when the Long Beach St. 49ers, matched as the +8.5 underdogs, defeated the Warriors 78-64 at home.

The Warriors don’t make a habit of losing at home. It goes without saying the loss came as a bit of a surprise to their backers: they are 18-3 SU on the season and an impressive 13-2 SU at home. As home favorites, they are 7-1 SU on the season.

Against the spread, the Rainbow Warriors don’t read as well by the stats. They are a so-so 8-7 ATS with a 12.1-point winning margin and a plus 1.4-point differential versus the spread. At home, they are 4-5 ATS with a 13.9-point winning margin and a negative 1.1-point differential versus the spread. As home favorites, they are 3-5 ATS with a 7.9-point winning margin and a negative 1.7-point differential versus the spread. In Conference games, they are 4-4 ATS with an 8.2-point winning margin and a plus 1.1-point differential versus the spread.

Betting Verdict
The market on this game opened around the 5.5-point mark but public betting has bet down the line to a low of 4-points at various sports betting exchanges, including BetCris,, Bookmaker and JustBet, to name a few. Considering the Rainbow Warriors have 55% of the spread tickets according to consensus betting polls, the line movement is rather contrary to what one typically expects in a seemingly bullish market. It’s a reverse line movement that is going against the hosts, which could suggest sharp money is on the visitors. Indeed, the Anteaters do strike a convincing pose and given their form they could give the Rainbow Warriors more than they bargained for, so we’re taking the visitors too as the road pups on our NCAA basketball picks.
