Virginia Tech vs. Miami, FL (-10) 9:30 ET
At 9:30 ET, the VA Tech Hokies faceoff with the Miami, FL Hurricanes who are listed on the NCAA Basketball odds as double digit favorites.  In the big picture, the greatest significance of this contest is that, as projected by ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi, Miami, FL is the last team out of the field of 68 for the upcoming NCAA Tournament.  Let’s take a look at the dynamics of this contest for a reason why Miami may get a dominating victory.

VA Tech has struggled mightily in the last several seasons.  Entering this year, their 3 previous year win totals declined from 16 to 13 to 9 victories.  Enter 1st year HC Buzz Williams, who led the Marquette program to great success.  Yet even under his leadership, the Hokies enter tonight with just an 11-21 SU mark. That includes their 81-80, heart-stopping victory yesterday vs. Wake Forest in this event.  To survive and advance, VA Tech needed Wake to miss 3 shots from 7 feet or closer in the closing seconds.  That was the Hokies’ first victory since February 9th.  Since that time, they had lost 7 consecutive games, including 4 road contests all by 12 or more points when they averaged just 54 PPG. Their final regular season game of the year came at home to this Miami team.  It was no contest, as Miami defeated them by a score of 82-61. This was very much like the first meeting between these schools which resulted in a Miami win of 76-52 in Miami on February 18th.  CCT handicapping theory is clear that VA Tech will suffer a letdown, following this straight up underdog victory.  In fact, there are 2 large proprietary situations, each of which exceeds 70% win expectancy that point out that very fact.

Miami, FL is in their 4th season under well-respected veteran HC Larranaga. In what was considered to be a rebuilding season by many, the Hurricanes were projected for a 10th place finish in the highly competitive ACC. But, the Hurricanes went 10-8 SU in ACC action, good for a 6th place seed in this event.  Five of their 8 losses in league play came to the best 4 teams in the league.  As well as their motivation of being on “the bubble,” it is important to note that Miami made our final list of Roadrunners. In combined road and neutral games, the Hurricanes went 10-5 SU ATS, including 3-0 ATS in these games when favored by 6 or more points. The status of PG Angel Rodriguez remains a question mark for today’s contest.  Consider it to be a positive, either way, as his teammates will step up in his absence or Rodriguez will be a positive indicator with his leadership.

With the Hurricanes having the motivation of the bubble, the proven excellence in this role of Roadrunner, and catching VA Tech off an improbable upset win, all leads to a double digit victory by Miami, much like the previous 20 point wins against the Hokies this season so back them with your NCAA Basketball picks
