After a rough start to the NCAA Basketball season, we look to get on track as the season has barely just begun. There’s plenty of time to get in the green and fill the pockets.

In betting, sometimes it’s not a matter of who will win the game but are they going to win by 20 or 30? This was the case yesterday as I faded two top 25 teams with freshman who have only played one game previously; time to move on.

Fordham Rams (1-0) vs. Syracuse Orange (1-0)

Winning Ugly

After winning 82-60 in their opener against Cornell, the Orange can’t come away with too much of a good taste in their mouths. They trailed by 6 points at halftime and as much as 14 points in the first half. Although he came away from his first college game with 8 rebounds and 7 assists, rookie Tyler Ennis was quite ineffective offensively has he finished the game with just 1 point on 0-6 shooting from the field. That said, the Orange also had some positives to take away from their first game of the season.

C.J.’s Show

We all have seen the success in the transition from college to the pros that former Orange player, Michael Carter-Williams has obtained. This season, C.J. Fair has the green light from head coach Jim Boeheim to let it all hang out. Fair has been an above average college player who has played in some very big games and has come up big. This is a player with great athletic ability and a nice shooting touch. In the season opener, he finished with 19 points and 7 turnovers. Look for Fair to have a big game against Fordham.

Syracuse will look to lean on the experience of Fair and big man Rakeem Christmas, but sophomore Trevor Cooney proved that he can be a big-time scorer if given the playing time. Don’t expect 27 points on 10 of 12 shooting every game from the guard, but he’ll definitely be in the mix as a starter and is off to a great start.

Stop Severe

Fordham recruited the New York State Player of the Year in guard Jon Severe and Severe opened up his college career with a huge 28 point performance in a win over St. Francis (PA). With 3 of its top 4 players returning this season, Fordham will be a team to be reckoned with. That said, the talent level at Syracuse is much higher.

Michigan State Spartans (1-0) vs. Kentucky Wildcats (2-0)

Early Testing

I call Kentucky the “one and done bunch” because Calipari basically recruits a player to play one season at Kentucky and then the player moves on to the NBA; the player isn’t at UK for an education. This is the case for freshman sensation Julius Randle, who is expected to be the top pick in next year’s NBA Draft. Although things can change quickly, Randle is off to a fast start in the Wildcats first two games, averaging 22.5 points and 14.5 rebounds.

Although Kentucky has 6 possible lottery NCAA Basketball picks on their team, they will certainly be tested against Michigan State. The Spartans are coming off of a 98-56 season opening victory over McNeese State. The Spartans have an experienced team with guards Keith Appling and Gary Harris. Harris got off to a good start this season with a 20 point, 10 rebound, and 6 assist performance against the Cowboys while Appling had a respectable 11 point, 6 rebound, and 4 assist outing. Juniors Travis Trice and Brendan Dawson were also major contributors, coming off the bench and Michigan State will need all of the offensive firepower that they can get against a team that’s laced with young talent.

This is a neutral site game and the NCAA Basketball odds makers have Kentucky as a 2.5 point underdog. Kentucky is number one for a reason and take the untested talent against a tough Michigan State team in which should be a great game for the bettor and fan alike.
