Season opener game for the Connecticut Huskies was a devastating loss, today they face the Northeaster Huskies. Will they redeem themselves? Expert capper Joe Catalina breaks down the game for a winning NCAA basketball pick.

Northeastern Huskies vs. #18 Connecticut Huskies

Take Nothing For Granted

This is what the 18th ranked Connecticut Huskies (0-1) and their head coach Kevin Ollie have learned after a devastating 67-58 loss to Wagner in the season opener. This was a game in which both teams shot less than 40 % from the field, but other than that, the Huskies didn't do anything out of the ordinary to lose to a team of such a lesser caliber. They just played from behind and didn't step up with any timely hoops. It's a definite learning experience for a young team and the pressure is on Connecticut as the 13 point betting favorite at home to produce a win tonight against Northeastern.

Team Chemistry

A team can have very talented components, but if they don't gel and build a chemistry, they won't be successful over a long period of time. Connecticut will look to play as a team as VCU transfer, Terry Larrier, has proven to bring his "A-Game" to this Huskies squad. Larrier produced 19 points and 7 rebounds on 3 of 7 shooting from beyond the arc against Wagner.

While I don't expect Larrier to put up these type of numbers on a regular basis, he's a much-welcomed addition to the Connecticut Huskies team which features key returnees Jalen Adams and Rodney Purvis. Throughout most of his collegiate career at Connecticut, Purvis has been a double figure scorer and led the team in scoring last season. In the loss to Wagner, Purvis had just 5 points on 2 of 7 shooting from the field. I expect Rodney Purvis to have a bounce back performance as Connecticut attempts to get in the win column for the first time this season, tonight.

Effective At Both Ends of the Court

On the positive side for Connecticut, freshman ,Alterique Gilbert, made a strong introduction at the collegiate level as he shot well and finished his first game with 14 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 steals. Look for Gilbert to play well against Northeastern as he looked quite sharp in game number 1 of the 2016-2017 NCAA Basketball Season.

From a Northeastern perspective, they possess the arsenal to compete with Connecticut, but will their defense hold up against Connecticut's offense? This is a team that allowed 52 points to Boston University in the first half of their season-opening 87-77 win. Senior transfer Alex Murphy and senior T.J. Williams combined for 50 points on 16 of 25 shooting from the field and could be a thorn in Connecticut's side.

Connecticut isn't looking to cover the spread, they're looking to win a game after a dismal season opener. This should be a close game and 13 points appear to be a lot. Take Northeastern to cover for your college basketball picks.
