Maryland might not look like a powerhouse of previous years, they start their season hosting the Eagles in what could be a one-sided affair. Here's our free NCAA Basketball pick.

American University vs MarylandMelo Trimble

This is a Maryland Terrapins that has lost some key players either to the NBA or have exhausted their college eligibility. One player that has returned is junior all -conference guard, Melo Trimble. There's no question that Trimble is the leader on this squad with a lot of incoming freshmen as he looks to improve his stock for the NBA.

Last season, Trimble averaged 14.8 points, 4.9 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game. Look for Trimble to play well, but if this game starts to get out of hand, look for Trimble to take a quick seat on the bench as he's dealing with an ankle injury.

He might not be what Rodney Hood was to Duke when he transferred, but senior transfer, L.G. Gill, brings experience to this team as he averaged double figures and was a prolific rebounder as a member of Duquesne. Gill has already proven himself as a member of the Terrapins as he poured in 13 points in an exhibition game against Catawba and expect him to be a factor in the middle against a weak American team.

 Super Freshman

Fewer expectations have been placed on Maryland this season as they're saturated with young freshman talent with no experience. Guards Anthony Cowan and Kevin Huerter should make an immediate impact in the backcourt while Justin Jackson will provide much-needed talent up front.

In their exhibition game against Catawba, both Cowan and Jackson were up to the task as they each scored 17 points. Although the level of opposition is quite low, this type of exhibition game and a game against American is a good way for these talented freshman to "get their feet wet". Melo Trimble grew up in the same area and as Anthony Cowan and has already provided his seal of approval as Trimble stated that Cowan is a good shooter, but a great passer. This has to be promising to Maryland and I expect Cowan to defer to the more experienced Trimble to lead the way.

 Uphill Climb

This is exactly what it's going to be for the 21 point underdog Eagles. Expectations aren't that great as they finished 12-19 last season and the Eagles will need sophomore guard, Devante Jones to play well after a solid freshman season. In his first year at the collegiate level, Jones averaged 12 points and 3.6 rebounds per fame. Look for Jones to play well, but this is a one-sided matchup as the betting odds indicate. Look for Melo Trimble to lead the way along with talented freshman recruited on this team.
