Miami-Fl. and N.C. State are trying to stay above .500 in ACC action and are struggling to do so. With the depth of the conference, other than playing Pittsburgh, every contest is a challenge.

The Hurricanes (13-4, 6-5-1 ATS) are 2-3 SU & ATS in league play. Miami is still thought of as NCAA tournament team, but that could change if they keep trending downward. The Wolfpack (13-6, 6-6 ATS) are not even a bubble team by so-called experts that chart this daily. N.C. State has good wins over Duke and Clemson at home and needs to win games like this and engineer a couple more upsets to gather more attention.

The opening college basketball odds have Miami-FL favored by 1.5 points. This is what each team needs to do to win and or cover.

Miami Has to Control Pace and Shoot Straight

Athletically, the Hurricanes can play with anyone. They have the speed and quickness to guard nearly any opponent and when they generate turnovers in the open floor, they frequently turn into easy buckets. The Canes problem in the ACC, shooting. They have shot under 40 percent in three of five games. Miami has fallen to 11th in three-point shooting in the conference and has made under 32 percent of deep shots seven times this season.

Besides making more shots, coach Jim Larranaga's squad has play at their speed, which allows there defense to be a greater factor, listed nationally at No. 10 in permitting only 62 points a contest.

The Wolfpack Will Have to Run to Win

N.C. State wants to get the ball and go. The Wolfpack average 80.8 PPG this season and have a magic number. When first-year head coach Kevin Keatts team scores 78 or more points, they are unbeaten at 11-0 (5-0 ATS). When the crew from Raleigh fails to reach that level of scoring, they are 3-6 and 1-6 ATS.

For N.C. State to be most effective on offense, the has to be in the hands of guards Braxton Beverly and Allerik Freeman. The freshman Beverly is the facilitator and Freeman the leading scoring. However, the breakout star in ACC action is seven-foot sophomore Omer Yurtseven. When his teammates get him in the flow of the offense, not only does he score nearly 20 points a game, but he rebounds better and blocks more shots.

Who is The ACC Winner?

For college basketball picks, it would make sense the Miami could slow down the Wolfpack and win, which is what the oddsmakers are saying. However, do the Canes make enough shots? That is where I think the game changes. All three sets of my power ratings have N.C. State winning and I will back them.
