Winning on the road is never an easy task in college basketball, but today the road team is just simply that much better when the Seton Hall Pirates visit Rutgers. Free NCAA basketball pick here.

Betting Odds
NCAA basketball odds right now have made Seton Hall a solid -5 favorite. This may seem like too many points to give a team that is still unproven, but I think they are simply more talented with a better coach. For one of my selections today I have no problem taking them in this spot.

Seton Hall Pirates
The Pirates are averaging 72.1 points per game, shooting for a 5.8% in the field, and 30.8% from beyond the arc. They are 5-2 on the year with their two losses being to two decent teams in Long Beach State and then on the road at George Washington. They also had two pretty solid wins against two decent SEC teams in Ole Miss and Georgia. Head coach Kevin Willard really needs to win with this team this year, they are young but they have some good athletes led by sophomore guard Isaiah Whitehead. If they don't make a postseason tournament, in which I think they will, don't expect Willard to be back.

Defensively Seton Hall is allowing 66 point per game, 42% shooting from the field, and 30.3% from beyond the arc. Last season they ranked ninth in the Big East in scoring defense and that is something they will definitely need to improve on. So far this season there statistics are better on this end of the floor and they will press at times which can be really disruptive for other teams. After losing their last game on the road we should see them focus in when they travel to nearby Rutgers, only about 30 minutes away in this New Jersey matchup.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights
Rutgers is averaging 71.5 points per game, shooting 43.2% from the field, and 28.9% from beyond the arc. Although they are at home, and seem to play better in their own gym, the matchups today are not on their side. They have lost their last three in a row to some decent competition, but overall they simply don't have a lot of talent. They are picked to finish last in the Big Ten because of their lack of talent and experience. Last season they were last in the league in scoring offense and field-goal percentage, but there is a bit of hope as their three leading scorers are all underclassmen.

On the defensive side Rutgers is allowing 74.2 points per game, 43.7% shooting from the field, and 31.3% from beyond the arc. Those are respectable numbers and I'm sure it is an area in which they will continue to address if they are going to have any kind of chance to compete in the Big Ten. Although they had one big upset last year in beating Wisconsin, I don't look for them to get a lot of stops against and athletic Seton Hall team.

If you go down team versus team comparisons you can make an easy argument to back Rutgers in this spot. They lost by one point to Wake Forest, a team that beat UCLA, a team that beat Kentucky. It simply does not work out like that though in sports, and it really comes down to the matchups. For this matchup Seton Hall is the much better team and I expect them to win by at least 10 points. For one of your NCAA basketball picks I recommend backing the Pirates laying the small number.
