Maryland (-2) vs. UConn 9:30 ET (Madison Square Garden) ESPN
This is the nightcap of the MSG Doubleheader in the “Jimmy V Classic.” It follows the opener of the evening card, which pits the contrasting styles of WVU and Virginia. This game is a battle of the No. 6th ranked Maryland Terrapins against the UConn Huskies.

UConn is just 2 years removed from their championship season. They will challenge for AAC superiority with 4 returning starters returning from a 20-win team for 3rd year HC Kevin Ollie. To date, the Huskies have devoured 4 creampuffs on their home court, all by 19 or more points. Of greater interest is their Thanksgiving Week Tournament against teams of this ilk. That resulted in a 1-2 SU mark, in which they defeated Michigan (74-60) followed by narrow defeats to Syracuse (79-76) and Gonzaga (73-70). It is a major concern for this offense that they made just 42% of their shots against those 3 opponents, including just 29% from the field. On the bright side, it now appears that the emergence of frosh PG Jalen Adams will provide the ability for Seton Hall transfer, Sterling Gibbs, to move off the ball, where both he and Rodney Purvis can be more effective. Interior force Brimah is a true rim protector, shot blocker and rebounder. Tonight, however, this team is outmatched and outclassed against a Maryland team that many project to win the Big 10 and remain in the Top 10 for the entire season.

Trends Analysis
Three returning starters are on a hand for 4th year HC Turgeon, who led Maryland to 28 wins and a 3rd round NCAA appearance last season.  Though the Terps lost “do everything” Dez Wells, the additions are far greater. They include shooting guard Rasheed Sulaimon, a scoring machine who transferred from Duke, as well as power forward, Robert Carter, a Georgia Tech transfer who is just beginning to come into his own. With frosh man-child, Diamond Stone, manning the middle, there is ample support for veteran interior force, Jake Layman and Melo Trimble, a soph-lead guard who may be the best in his position in the country.

Like UConn, Maryland has devoured their share of cupcakes in the early part of the season. But, they have also had great success against quality opposition with a victory over Georgetown, as well as double digit defeats of quality mid-majors, Illinois St. and Rhode Island. The lone loss has been on the road at top-ranked N. Carolina, where they were competitive the entire contest before falling (89-81). The Terps are a superior offensive team, shooting 55% from the field under the guidance of Trimble. Along with Turgeon’s mark of 45-23 ATS away vs. non-conference foes, and only a single loss, it points them out as the superior team in this matchup.
