Maryland Terrapins at Syracuse Orange

With the big Thanksgiving week of college hoops tournaments behind us, the schedule lightens up a bit heading into the end of the fall semester when finals and Christmas break interrupt matters. But while the slate gets thinner, it doesn’t mean there aren’t any intriguing or crucial matchups on the near horizon, such as this week’s ACC-Big Ten Challenge will offer up for our viewing and wagering amusement.

Monday’s fixture includes a clash between a pair of solid programs as the Maryland Terrapins pay a visit to Syracuse to take on the Orange in a 7 PM (ET) tip on ESPN2. Though neither school is ranked, both sides have gotten off to good starts with the Terps 6-1 and the Orange 5-0. BetOnline sent Syracuse out -1 before early support drove that spread up to -3½. Playing the scoreboard means deciding which way to go on a 135½-136 total.

Orange Could Be Missing Battle Monday

Maryland was drawing a little bit of interest from voters in last week’s polls before heading to Florida for the Emerald Coast Classic. Mark Turgeon’s troops ran into a determined St. Bonaventure squad in the opener and fell 63-61 as 10-point chalk to suffer their first defeat of the year. Turnovers did the Terrapins in, 20 giveaways making it tough to overcome poor shooting from outside. Maryland bounced back with an 80-65 win and cover vs. New Mexico the next day, both tourney games finishing ‘under’ the totals.

Jim Boeheim’s bunch has yet to leave the comforts of the Carrier Dome with an early-season slate that has been on the easy side of things, somewhat typical for Syracuse. The Orange didn’t play at all over the Thanksgiving holiday following a pair of wins over Oakland and Toledo earlier in the week. All four of Syracuse’s lined games this season have stayed ‘under’ NCAA basketball odds, and the Orange could be without leading scorer Tyus Battle, who is listed as questionable with a back injury suffered in the Toledo game.

Rivalry Trends, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick

The ninth meeting on the hardwood between the two schools will be their first as Big Ten-ACC foes. Maryland stands 5-3 in the previous eight clashes, the Terps winning the first five and Syracuse taking the last three. Their most recent encounter came in 2014 as ACC rivals when the Orange grabbed a 57-55 decision in College Park. Syracuse was favored by 4 in that contest that never reached a 130½-point total.

This is a big step up in competition for the Orange who might also suffer from some post-Turkey Day rust. With Battle iffy, I’m playing the ‘under’ for my free college basketball pick.
