A fantastic start to March Madness on Thursday, as we all remember why this is one of the best two-day spans for sports fans. One of these games is a morning game, so I’m writing before both of my picks yesterday have tipped off. I should probably pick Oregon because they are wearing green.

  Iona vs Oregon

Oregon gets a short trip to Sacramento in this game and should have a friendly crowd on hand as they take on the Iona Gaels. Oregon better not relax as Iona can bomb 3’s from deep, which should keep them in this game.

The Iona Gaels finished third in the competitive MAAC before going on a run in their conference tournament to earn themselves a bid to the Big Dance. Iona has some of the classic characteristics of a live dog: fine shooting percentages from the field, dangerous from beyond the arc, and can hold their own on the glass. Their leading scorer is 6’ 8” forward, Jordan Washington, who averages 17.9 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Washington is followed in scoring by a rotation of five guards who score between 9.3 and 11.3 points per game.

With Iona having a star big man, it will be even more important for the Ducks to find a solution to the absence of 6’ 10”, Chris Boucher. Boucher was lost for the season 2 games ago and Oregon promptly got beat by Arizona in the first game he missed. Even if Oregon eventually wins this game, they still haven’t gotten all of the kinks out of their rotation without Boucher. For this reason, I like Iona’s ability to hang around and cover the 15 points now available at 5Dimes.

  Kent State vs. UCLA

The Golden Flashes come into this game scorching hot, winners of 9 of their last 10 games SU. UCLA has won 10 of their last 11 SU as well, but it is the scoring trends that I like in this matchup as the key to cashing a ticket.

With Kent State winning 3 games in a row as listed underdogs in their conference tournament to make it in the bracket this year, it is no surprise that they are a huge underdog against UCLA. The Golden Flashes find themselves as 18.5-point dogs against the Bruins in a game that will be played in Sacramento. There should be a large contingent of UCLA fans in the building at tip-off.

This game I like the total more than the side though, as it is sitting at a sky high 161.5 points. Kent State comes into this game with a strong 3-11 O-U trend, while UCLA is riding a 2-8 O-U trend of their own. Kent State has gone 10 non-overtime games without breaking 77 points, and they are not likely to do so here. And recently, UCLA has slowed down a bit on offense because of the injuries that they are dealing with. Both TJ Leaf and Lonzo Ball are probable for this game against Kent State, but are banged up. It leads me to believe that if UCLA gets up big they will try to rest those starters, which should slow the game down. Take Under 161.5 here as one of your Friday college basketball picks.
