NCAA basketball is in full swing and today we are to take a look at a couple of the matchups in which there is I think some value on the underdogs. Perennial MAAC power Iona travels to take on Syracuse, and Big Ten Challenger Purdue visits Marquette.

Iona vs Syracuse

Iona dropped their opening contest at Albany by just a bucket and things don’t get easier with this next matchup at Syracuse.  Under head coach, Tim Cluess Iona has been one of the top powers in their league the last several seasons, and although they lost some key players they bring back several players that saw significant minutes as they are picked this year to win the MAAC. In their matchup versus Albany they simply had a bad first half scoring just 23 points and for the most part, they couldn’t hit a shot from beyond the arc going just 4-22 from distance.

What I like is the fact they did not turn the ball over very much and they outplayed Albany 44-35 in the second half. Syracuse, of course, will be extremely tough to beat in the Carrier Dome and oddsmakers have made them a pretty big -10.5 favorite. However, for my NCAA basketball pick, I will take Iona plus the points. This Syracuse team has a lot of young faces with just two returning starters who are both sophomores. They will be challenged tonight against a veteran Iona team who should be well equipped to face Jim Boeheim’s tough zone defense.

Purdue vs Marquette

Because Purdue is ranked oddsmakers have come out making them a -2 favorite in this spot, but for my NCAA pick I like Marquette to go ahead and win this game straight up. Not to say that this is not a good Purdue team because it is, I just like how Marquette matches up with them especially at home.

The main supporting cast has returned for Matt Painter highlighted by Isaac Haas, but I feel they will have a tough time getting enough stops against a Marquette team that can flat-out score. Last year the Golden Eagles led the nation in three-point shooting and ranked eighth in offensive efficiency. Although they did lose quite a bit of scoring I think they have enough pieces to make a back to the dance come March. I am imagining this game to really get up and down with plenty of points on both ends and simply the fact that Marquette is at home should be the difference.  The tempo will side with Marquette.
