Then there was one, that one being the North Carolina Tar Heels who remain the lone team with an unblemished record in the Atlantic Coast Conference standings.

A pair of wins this week and Roy Williams' team should be back to No. 1 in the country -- where the Tar Heels were to begin the year -- in next week's polls thanks to Oklahoma dropping its second game of the campaign Monday at Iowa State. The odds are certainly in UNC's favor for Wednesday night's matchup when the Wake Forest Demon Deacons coming to Chapel Hill, ESPN2 broadcasting the 7 PM (ET) from Dean Smith Center and the Tar Heels 16 point favorites at BetOnline with 165½ for the total at the same shop.

It's the second consecutive year the Deacons and Heels will only meet once in the regular season, and North Carolina will be looking to add another notch to its already commanding lead in the series (157-66). The Tar Heels have won 10 of the last 13 and 20 of the 25 played at the Smith Center, Wake Forest's last win on this floor coming in January 2010.

Betting UNC has been the way to go the last two meetings, the Tar Heels beating the NCAA basketball odds with spreads of -8 and -14. The Demon Deacons had covered four of the six prior to that and the 'over' has cashed three of the last four contests, all of those totals in the mid-to-upper 140s.

Deacons Begin Tough 3-Game Stretch Against Ranked Foes
Things are probably about to go from bad to worse for Danny Manning and Wake Forest (10-7 straight up, 5-9-1 against the spread). The Demon Deacons just came through a 2-5 stretch that included three games against ranked teams -- vs. Xavier and Duke, at Louisville -- and are now heading into three more against squads in the polls, a Saturday trek to No. 15 Miami following this collision with the Tar Heels before hosting No. 13 Virginia on Monday.

The Demon Deacons were even favored in their last two games and couldn't pull off a second ACC win in front of the home fans against Virginia Tech and Syracuse. Wake enjoyed one its best games offensively in the 93-91 loss to the Hokies last week, but played horribly on the defensive end. I hope every college basketball bettor was smart enough to get on the Orange +2 at Joel Coliseum; Syracuse didn't even have a very good game yet managed to rout the sloppy Deacs.

One way 'Cuse turned it into a laugher was frustrating Wake Forest's Devin Thomas on the inside. The senior forward did add 13 rebounds to his total, but was held to just nine points thanks in part to his poor free-throw shooting. You can bet that UNC's Kennedy Meeks and Brice Johnson are going to try and do the same to Thomas tonight.

'Over' A Big Winner In UNC Tilts
North Carolina (16-2 SU, 7-10-1 ATS) is just six points from being undefeated on the season, a 4 point upset at Northern Iowa in November and a 2 point loss at Texas about three weeks later the only black marks on the Tar Heels' schedule. They have reeled off 9-straight wins since the setback to the Longhorns, though the Heels haven't won over college basketball bettors in that span going 4-5 vs. the numbers.

North Carolina does have the attention of those wagering 'overs' going back to that game in Austin and before (13-5 O/U on season). A string of nine consecutive high-side winners was snapped last Saturday against rival NC State, the Tar Heels failing to cover a 16 point spread in the 67-55 triumph that also fell well short of a 158 point total.

With all of the upsets we've seen in recent days, the Heels should be focused to give their all tonight, which is why my free NCAA basketball pick is laying the points.
