The Oregon State Beavers, who are on a 5 game losing streak and have been a major disaster this season. The Beavers schedule looks quite ominous as USC and UCLA are coming up very shortly. Despite the Kent State Golden Flashes “flashing” a 7-4 mark, they’re a mere 1 ½ point betting favorite in this matchup as the odds makers aren’t showing much confidence in Kent State. Is Kent State the steal that they appear to be?

Kent State Golden Flashes (7-4) vs Oregon State Beavers (3-9) What’s Appealing About Oregon State?

Not very much as they’re coming off of an upset loss to the Portland Pilots and can’t seem to break another losing streak. Let’s also not forget that Oregon State is 2-8 against the spread and they just can’t seem to get their offense going, averaging 67 points per game.

Leading scorer, Tres Tinkle has been a shining star for this squad, averaging 20.2 points and 8.3 rebounds and he’s been unable to play. In return, Stephen Thompson Jr. (14.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists) has made some really solid contributions and is always looking to get his offensive game going. The problem is that Thompson Jr. is shooting just over 35% from the field and that won’t get it done, especially in the Pac-12 Conference.

Oddsmakers seem to think that because Oregon State is in a far superior conference to that of Kent State that the Beavers should get respect where the odds are concerned. I happen to disagree.

Is Kent State the Better Squad?

Despite coming off of a disappointing 68-63 loss to the Wright State Raiders, it appears that Kent State is the better pick in this game. A close loss to Wright State is nothing to be ashamed of as the Raiders are having an outstanding season. Kent State has tailed off a bit since their 3-0 start to the season, but have since won 3 out of their last 4 games. This is a team that averages a healthy 82 points per game and possesses a significant edge on the glass versus Oregon State with 43 rebounds per game. A great deal of their success has to be attributed to leading scorer Jimmy Hall.

Mr. Double Double

Indeed, this is what Jimmy Hall is as he will be a thorn in the Beavers side. Hall can basically do it all as he’s averaging 18.6 points and 10.8 rebounds per game. He’s also good for 1.5 blocks per game and is coming off of a strong defensive game against Wright State in which he grabbed 11 rebounds, 3 steals and 3 blocked shots. Hall is the key to Kent State’s success and the only legitimate star in this ball game.

Oregon State has given the bettor no reason to side with them other than them being in the Pac-12. That’s not good enough.
