If the past week is any indication, trap games are primed and ready to snare the nation’s top programs on Saturday. No. 25 Florida and No. 16 Creighton bettors might want to watch out.

No. 1 Villanova, No. 2 Kansas, and No. 3 Kansas each tasted defeat last time out. Including last Saturday, 15 ranked teams have gone down in the past seven days. It’s that time of year when conference play, school, scheduling, and regression to the mean are taking a toll on many top-tier programs, while young and promising teams begin to gain experience, confidence, and a few upset wins. Bettors beware.

Take note of these potential trap games for this Saturday:

Florida Gators vs Oklahoma Sooners

The Big 12 won seven of 10 games in the SEC/Big 12 challenge last season. It’s the superior basketball conference and has been for decades. The SEC, in fact, has won just six contests in its last 45 played on Big 12 hardwood. Granted only eight of these tipped off with the SEC representative as road chalk, but the “football” conference only mustered two wins in these and failed to cover the spread in each (0-8 ATS overall).

Florida, losers of two of their last three, fell to then-No. 1 Kansas 71-65 as 8-point dogs in 2014, the last time it ventured into Big 12 territory. The trip before that in 2012, ranked 25th in the AP Poll, they were stunned by unranked Kansas State 67-61 as 11-point chalk. Now they have to win at the always-tough Lloyd Noble Center against a rapidly improving Sooners squad. In its last four games, Oklahoma topped Texas Tech, shocked No.-18 West Virginia on the road, lost to Iowa State in overtime, and fell at Texas by a point. An outright upset by the Sooners isn’t out of the question here.

DePaul Blue Demons vs Creighton Bluejays

Creighton made the trap-game list last Saturday and was shocked at home by Marquette 102-94. It all has to do with the season-ending knee injury to star point guard Mo Watson, Jr. The nation’s assist leader before going down, the senior accounted for roughly 35 points per game when you factored in his scoring.

Creighton, who fell to Georgetown 71-51 as 2-point chalk last time out, has failed to cover the spread by a combined 36.5 points in its last two games. The Blue Jays still have the talent to make it to the NCAA tournament, but they have to get it together—and fast. The betting market can’t catch up to the team’s free fall.

Depaul isn’t likely to win this outright, but Creighton laying 19 points to open is too good of value to pass up. The Blue Demons have struggled in this matchup historically, but have fallen by more than 19 just twice in the last 10 meetings. They put a scare in at Villanova earlier in the year, losing 68-65 as 26.5-point underdogs. Expect similar here for your NCAA basketball picks.
