Terrapins Will Prove To Be Rude Hosts To No. 22 Hoosiers

Free NCAAB Pick: Maryland ATS

Best Line Offered:

There’s no question that Archie Miller has done a quick job making Indiana basketball relevant again. But if the Hoosiers are going to prove they’re back to being more than just relevant, Miller’s squad is going to have to prove it in some tough road tests coming up in the near future, starting with a Friday night battle in Maryland against the Terrapins.

With students yet to return to College Park for the spring term, it will be interesting to see what kind of crowd shows up at Xfinity Center for the marquee contest on Friday’s short NCAA basketball odds card. Maryland is drawing the short chalk line for the tilt that finds the total in the low-140s.

‘Over’ Has Cashed Last Six Maryland Matches

Indiana hits the floor for the first time since Sunday’s beatdown at Michigan where the Wolverines led wire-to-wire. Friday’s contest begins a 7-game stretch for the Hoosiers during which five matchups will take place on the road – one of those at Michigan State – and two tough home affairs against Nebraska and Michigan. Rob Phinisee has missed the last three games with a concussion he suffered a few weeks ago, and the freshman guard is questionable to face the Terrapins.

Mark Turgeon brings his Terps home following successive road wins, the latest an easy 87-67 victory Tuesday night in Minnesota where Bookmaker closed Maryland as a 2-point underdog. The Terrapins trailed by four at intermission, but poured it on in the second half by hitting 16-of-23 field goals and closed the game on a 14-0 run. It was the seventh cover in the last nine games for Maryland, along with a push, and the final got past a 141½-point total for the sixth consecutive “over” winner.

Last 4 Regular Season Matchups Have Been ‘Under’ Winners

Indiana has an 8-5 advantage in what is still a new conference rivalry, and the schools have split the six meetings since Maryland joined the Big Ten. This is the fourth consecutive year the teams only have one regular season matchup, and neither team has won on the other’s home floor since December 2009 when the Terrapins beat the Hoosiers at Bloomington in a non-conference clash. The last clash in College Park was almost exactly two years ago, Maryland pulling a mild 75-72 upset as a 2-point underdog.

The Terrapins are one of six Big Ten schools sitting just outside the AP Top 25, and while a win wouldn’t push them up back into the ranks immediately, it would be a nice first step. My free NCAA basketball pick is on a Maryland team that should be playing with a bit of a chip on its shoulder.
