With the end of 2017 comes the beginning of conference play for many in college basketball. And Wednesday we have couple of excellent contests that should be quite entertaining!

In each case we are looking for underdogs who can cover or win outright against the college basketball odds; hence, the title of the article. For this weekly midweek piece, we are adventuring into the Big East and Mountain West conferences for college basketball picks, looking to improve on 7-3 ATS record for these selections. Here is why I believe I can come up with two more winners.

Butler Could Get Bitten by Georgetown

On FS1 at 6:30 Eastern, Butler (10-3, 7-5 ATS) opens Big East action against Georgetown (10-1, 3-5 ATS). The Bulldogs have played a far more challenging schedule and are 4-point favorites. Butler is considered a middle-of-the-road team in the Big East, while Georgetown is thought be starting over under first-year coach Patrick Ewing. The former Hoyas superstar had never been a head coach and has no experience in holding a job at this level, and his club was picked last in the preseason magazines.

Though Georgetown has not faced as many difficult foes, the changes in this team include a group taking better shots and making them (49.4%). On defense, the overall intensity has picked up in holding opponents to 38 percent shooting, and with Ewing's biggest coaching contribution the Hoyas are +9 in rebounding. Big East play could wear down the Hoyas, but for a conference opener at home the situation appears to help Georgetown -- and all three of Butler's losses have occurred when not playing at home.

Fresno State Up to Task of Handling Nevada

Nevada (11-3, 8-4-1 ATS) is picked to win the MWC again this season, led by Jordan Caroline. The Wolfpack have the right attributes, and their only one off performance this season was in the last outing, falling to San Francisco 66-64 as 12.5-point favorites. That was Nevada's lowest scoring output of the season.

Fresno State (10-3, 5-4 ATS) is a 2.5-point home underdog in this matchup, and the Bulldogs are very effective shooting the ball, making more than half their attempts (50.5%). This is how they stay with Nevada in this contest, by taking good shots, connecting on them and winning on the glass. Fresno State has a bevy of double-digit scorers andwill rely on that balance to hopefully engineer the upset.

While I really like Nevada, this is a terrific opportunity for the Bulldogs, who are 12-4 ATS off a home win. One other betting tidbit for you: These rivals are 10-2 OVER at Fresno.
