The start of the New Year brings us college basketball and we start heading into conference play with earnest. This generally means more chances for upsets because of familiarity with opponent.

When looking over the college basketball odds this week, we will be heading into the SEC and breaking down a fierce neighboring state rivalry.

We split last week's two selections, leaving our college basketball picks at a still sharp 8-4 ATS on the season. Let's start 2018 with two outright upsets!

Missouri Takes The Battle of Columbia's

Missouri and South Carolina both play in the SEC and both hail from Columbia in their respective states. The Tigers (10-3, 6-6 ATS) from the 'Show Me' state have not played since Dec. 23rd and you can be certain coach Cuonzo Martin has spent a lot of time working ball-handling drills during the break. Missouri has turned the ball over 21 times in each of their past two outings and the last one cost them, losing to rival Illinois 70-64.

The Gamecocks (9-4, 5-6-1 ATS) from the Palmetto State are also off a defeat, dropping their conference opener at Ole Miss 74-69. For some reason, coach Frank Martin is having problems recruiting players that can shoot, as again his South Carolina squad is connecting on just 42.7 percent of attempted shots. Nationally, that is tied for 269th, which is a long way from the Top 20. The Gamecocks have been even more errant of late, not shooting over 40 percent in their last three games.

With Missouri connecting on 48.3 percent of attempts and a solid defensive club at 39.4 percent on shots allowed, they should send South Carolina to 13-27 ATS when they are a home favorite of three or less.

Bitter Battle in the Dakota's

Free Basketball Pick: North Dakota State +1Best Line Offered: at 5Dimes

I am fine with the idea the some of you might question how I came up with this contest between South Dakota State (12-5, 7-4 ATS) and North Dakota State (8-6, 5-4 ATS). As is the case when betting, the idea is to win this one make sense to me as potential winner.

The state school from South Dakota has an appropriate nickname for they prefer to play in the Jackrabbits. They like to get up and down the floor and the Jackrabbits average 85.7 points a game and their contests average about 125 total shots.

Their Summit League rivals to the north are known as the Bison, and they play a more deliberate style. North Dakota State averages 73.8 PPG on 55 attempts.

Both clubs are quite accurate from the field at around 48 percent, but N.D. State is the better defensive unit, holding foes to 40.4 percent. With the Bison the better defensive club and most likely able to control the tempo, they have my attention. Plus, I was holding back one fact, North Dakota State is 11-1 SU when hosting their rivals.
