We continue our search to find college hoops underdogs that can engineer upsets in the middle of the week. Wednesday, we have two more and both will be played in the Eastern Time Zone.

App State Inviting With James Madison's Shooting Woes

James Madison might be a 2-point home favorite over Appalachian State, but to win and cover the Duke will have to find their shooting touch. The Dukes are 1-4, and all of those defeats have come in the last four games in which they also failed to beat the spread. James Madison is only connecting on 40.4 percent of its shot attempts. The Dukes are also a very ineffective 3-point shooting club at only 28 percent, all of which plays into them being picked last in the CAA this season.

Appalachian State is 3-2 and 2-1 ATS, and two of those covers came in the role of underdog against Iowa State and UTEP. The Mountaineers prefer to play at a much quicker tempo and are averaging 94.2 points a game. Their offense is built around 3-point shooting, with nearly half their attempts coming from behind the arc and they have made a dozen a game.

James Madison has really struggled playing these types of games and is 1-9 ATS in nonconference action in its past 10. If App State starts raining 3's and the Dukes have to play catch up, that could be an issue, which is why I prefer the Mountaineers for college basketball picks.

Belmont Can Sneak Under Number in Providence

Belmont is again the favorite in the Ohio Valley Conference, and it makes the trip to Rhode Island to face Providence, which has all five starters back. In spite of playing just a handful of games, these squads have a common opponent in Washington. The Bruins lost at the Huskies 86-82 as 2-point road favorites in their opener and the Friars defeated Washington on their home court 77-70 as an 8-point choice.

Providence was sent out as 9.5-point favorite and the Friars have shot the ball extremely well at 54.2 percent, and even though they are only taking 14 three-pointers a contest they are knocking down 54.4 percent of them.

In spite of this, why I will take Belmont with the points is this is also an experienced group with a senior point guard in Austin Luke. The Bruins are used to winning and will not be intimated by the setting. They are also 13-5 ATS in away games after dropping 10 or more 3's in consecutive contests.
