Sunday 1/28 College Basketball Odds: Michigan vs. Michigan State

Michigan (14-7/4-4) and Michigan State (12-9/4-4) will meet for the first time this season on Sunday in East Lansing. The opening tip is slated for 1:00 PM ET, and the game will be televised by CBS.

A consensus of early college basketball betting odds shows Michigan State as a 2.0-point favorite, and at the time of this writing (1/28) there was no posted total. This will be the first meeting of the season between these bitter in state Big Ten Conference rivals. Michigan State has won the last 4 games in this head to head series, and each of the previous 3 have gone over the total.

Good News/Bad News for Michigan

Michigan has been terrific on the offensive end of the floor throughout their previous 5 games. During that exact time frame, Michigan averaged 76.0 points scored per contest, shot an impressive 51.6% from the field, and converted on a red-hot 45.9% of 3-point attempts. Here’s the bad news, over that same period, the Wolverines allowed their opponents to shoot 53.4% from the field, and make 45.2% of its long distance tries.

The Tom Izzo Factor

Michigan State is 0-3 SU&ATS in their last 3 games. It would be difficult to imagine a Tom Izzo coached team losing 4 straight games, let alone that transpiring on their home floor. Izzo’s teams have historically improved as seasons have progressed. I wouldn’t bet against Michigan State not being well prepared on Sunday, and putting an end to their present 3-game slide is more likely than not.

Final Analysis and Pick

Although Michigan is coming off 2 strong performances, both those games took place at home. The Wolverines are a dismal 0-5 in true road games this season, and have failed to cover on 4 of those occasions.

Michigan State looked to be rejuvenated from a poor start by winning its first 3 conference games. However, things have taken a turn for the worse since that time, and the Spartans have lost 4 of their last 5. Nevertheless, they’re a respectable 3-1 in conference home games. Their only defeat in that sequence came at the hands of nationally ranked Purdue.

When handicapping this contest, it all comes down to one simple thing. I can’t pull the trigger on a team playing an away game this far into a season, and they’ve yet to win in that precise role. That’s even more so when considering a point spread within this parameter. My lean will clearly be with the home side, and one of my college basketball predictions will be reflective of that sentiment.
