The Providence Friars shocked the world by ousting Xavier, the third-ranked team in the nation, and advancing to the Big East Final against national powerhouse Villanova. But there are a few things you should know about Providence that will allay any notion that this is just a middling team that got lucky. Let’s start with a few trends entering this clash.

  • Providence is 11-5 ATS in their last 16 Saturday games.
  • Providence is 4-0 ATS in their last four games as an underdog.
  • Providence is 15-5 ATS in their last 20 neutral site games as an underdog.
  • Providence is 4-0 ATS in their last four games vs. a team with a winning straight up record.

And let’s also remember that Providence does not shy away when the opponent is imposing. The Friars went 3-2 straight up and 4-1 ATS vs. top Big East and nationally ranked foes Xavier and Villanova this season. On Jan 23, the Friars traveled to the Wells Fargo Center and were handed an 89-69 drubbing by the Wildcats as 16-point road dogs. But Providence got its revenge three weeks later and defeated Nova 76-71 as 9-½ point home hounds.

This game will take place at a neutral site, Madison Square Garden, and this locale has been good to both teams. Villanova trounced Marquette in the quarterfinals 94-70 and then gave a good old fashioned beat down to Butler by the score of 87-68. Needless to say, the Wildcats covered the number in both and cashed for all those backing them in their NCAA basketball picks. Meanwhile, their opponents from Providence edged Creighton 72-68 in the quarterfinals and then stunned Xavier 75-72 in overtime.

The NCAA basketball odds are simply too big to ignore. The Friars are getting a whopping 12½ points, in a game in which I believed that they would only get 7½, making this a wager bursting with value. Providence has already defeated Villanova once this season and has demonstrated the ability to get up for big games. Their defense is sound enough to contain Villanova’s prolific scoring punch and I say this one stays within double digits. Back the Friars.
