It's not often you find a 6-0 team nearly a double-digit underdog in the NCAAB. Our expert handicapper breaks down the situation and gives an ACC/Big 10 challenge NCAA basketball pick!

2015-16 NCAAB Record: 2-0, +2.00 Units

Minnesota Golden Gophers vs Florida State Seminoles

After going 2-16 in conference play last year, the Minnesota Golden Gophers are enjoying their hot 6-0 start in non-conference play this year. They hope to continue that hot start as they match up with 25th ranked Florida State in the ACC/Big 10 Challenge on Monday night. The NCAAB odds available aren’t reflected in the records, though, as Florida State has been placed as heavy 8.5-point home favorites in this game. The O/U total has opened at 155.5 points.

Minnesota is coming off of a bit of a letdown game if you can call a 12-point win as such. But against a lower level opponent such as Southern Illinois, that is exactly what the team called the win in the post-game press conference. Minnesota won that game 57-45 and got continued consistent play by a true freshman, Amir Coffey, in the win. Coffey, a 6’ 8” local product, has averaged 15.8 points per game this year and had his coming out party a week ago against St. Johns, where he scored 30 points. He was 6-9 from the floor on Friday night, and only had one turnover in 35 minutes of play.

Florida State rebounded from their only loss of the season against Temple with a 72-61 over Illinois on Friday night. The Seminoles only led by 3 at halftime but used a 9-0 run in the second half to pull away and cover their 7.5-point spread. Florida State has above average size in the frontcourt, with Jonathan Isaac at 6’ 10” and Michael Ojo at 7’ 1” leading the team in rebounds with 6.3 and 5.3 rebounds per game apiece. Their backup center, 7’ 4” sophomore Christ Koumadje, has scored well in limited minutes as well although he picks up a foul every 6 minutes of game time.

Against lessor competition, Florida State’s offense has racked up the points in 4 home games this season. In that situation, they average 96.7 points per game on 53% shooting from the floor. Only 2 of those 4 home games have had lines offered, and the Seminoles have covered a 14 and 25-point spread against Iona and Detroit, respectively. Their loss against Temple as a 10-point favorite was on a neutral floor.

Betting Analysis

This will be the first road game for the Golden Gophers after going 6-0 SU and 3-2 ATS at home to start the season. Last year Minnesota went just 3-9 ATS on the road, not surprising since they went just 8-23 SU overall. But I think this is a team trending in the right direction, and I expect them to give the Seminoles a good test. Maybe not enough to win outright, but keeping the game within 8.5 points should be within reach.
