Florida St. (7-0 SU) of the ACC meets George Washington (4-3 SU) of the A10 in the nightcap of the BB&T Classic. The game is scheduled for a 4 pm ET tip and expert capper has the valuable NCAA basketball pick.

Florida State Seminoles vs George Washington Colonials

The George Washington program was rolling along with a trio of 20-win seasons for a total of 74 victories the last 3 seasons. The resume for last year featured an upset of Virginia and 11 league victories in the highly respected A10. That is normally good enough for a NCAA invite. Snubbed by the NCAA for inclusion in their event, all the Colonials did accept an invitation to the NIT, where they defeated quality foes, Hofstra, Monmouth, Florida, San Diego St. and Valpo to win the event! The program appeared to be on a continuing upward path, despite the fact that only 2 starters were scheduled to return this season.

In the fall, however, a major disruption to the game plan took place, when 5-year HC Lonergan was fired by the administration for conduct disrespectful to his players. Five-year Asst. Maurice Joseph was left to pick up the pieces. Joseph’s pedigree includes his playing days at Michigan St. under Izzo and at respected eastern program Vermont. In early season action, the Colonials had gone 4-3 SU, prior to hosting S. Florida on Saturday. Key returning player for G. Washington is an interior force, Cavanaugh. The addition of Jaren Sina, a Seton Hall transfer, was much needed.  The player with the most improvement, however, is Yuta Watanabe. Check his status for this game, as he missed the Harvard contest on Wednesday (foot) and is questionable for the weekend action. Facing an ACC opponent at less than full strength will be quite a challenge for a Colonial team trying to put the pieces back together.

Such is hardly the case for a Top 20 Florida St. team, who enters this contest undefeated at 7-0 SU. Included were high-profile victories by 17 over Temple and 11 over Illinois in their Thanksgiving Day Tourney. Midweek, Florida St. won 75-67 on their home court against a much-improved Minnesota team. Under 15th year HC Leonard Hamilton, the Sems are a tall and talented team with great depth. The outstanding guard play of Xavier Rathan-Mayes and Dwayne Bacon lead a lengthy backcourt. Trios of 7 footers man the interior. The addition of interior force, Isaac, adds a potential NBA prospect. To date, this has been a powerful offensive team, averaging 89 PPG on 51% shooting. If they play to their potential today, they should have no issue covering against a short-handed George Washington team, playing the 2nd of consecutive days.

I invite you to put the odds in your favor and join me in my NCAA basketball pick on the Florida St. Sems tonight.
