It’s not a huge slate full of marquee matchups like we saw Saturday. Still, Monday’s NCAA basketball odds card does include a couple of ranked teams in action, including Bobby Hurley’s No. 20 Arizona State Sun Devils who travel east to Music City for a Pac-12/SEC clash against the Vanderbilt Commodores.

We’ll see how many Vandy students are left behind to fill Nashville’s Memorial Gymnasium following the end of finals week.

Commodores Miss Garland’s Offensive Prowess

It has been 10 days since Arizona State was on the floor at L.A.’s Staples Center, the Sun Devils suffering their first loss of the season after letting a double-digit lead against Nevada slip away in a 72-66 final. It was the worst offensive showing on every front for ASU this season, failing to reach the 70-point plateau for the first time and shooting just about 40% overall while making just 5-of-20 from 3-point range. The Sun Devils did manage to bounce back with a road win on Saturday, this time rallying from a huge hole at Georgia for a 76-74 dubya.

It has been nearly two weeks since Bryce Drew’s Vanderbilt team played, the Commodores cruising to a 79-51 win at home over Middle Tennessee State as 14½-point chalk at Bookmaker on December 5. Despite wins and covers in two of the past three games, Vanderbilt still struggled some without Darius Garland. The star freshman suffered a season-ending knee injury in a loss to Kent State more than three weeks ago, robbing the team of its top scorer and top threat from beyond the arc.

Home/Road Trends No Help For Bettors

All four of the previous meetings have resulted in an ASU victory, with Monday’s matchup the first to take place in Nashville. Last year’s clash took place in Tempe and saw the Sun Devils come out extremely cold as the Commodores built a 13-0 lead in the first five minutes before Arizona State caught fire to eventually claim a 76-64 triumph. The final just covered the -11½ spread Sun Devil backers were asked to lay, never really threatening a 155½-point total.

Arizona State has not been a good road club recently, going 2-8-2 ATS its last 12, and Vanderbilt is 2-6 ATS its last eight at home. My free college basketball pick is on the Sun Devils picking up their second straight win over an SEC opponent as the Commodores shake off a little rust.
