Dayton could be a sleeper team this year and right now they're on the top of the Atlantic 10, but today they travel to face Rhode Island. Who will be our NCAAA basketball pick?

NCAA Basketball Pick: Rhode Island +2
Best Line Offered: at Bet365

NCAA basketball odds experts have come out making Rhode Island a +1 underdog and the total around 131. This is the kind of line that really jumps out at you considering the league standings and Dayton's overall season. For one of my selection I will back the Rams at +1 to pull the upset.

Dayton Flyers
Dayton is averaging 74.5 points per game while shooting 47.2% from the field, and allowing 64 points per game on 39.9% shooting from the field. On the season they are 12-10 overall against the spread, but a very good 6-3 on the road. There is a lot to like about this Dayton team and they have won eight games in a row. However, in that stretch they have faced mostly the bottom part of the league except for a six point win at St. Bonaventure and beating George Washington at home by seven. Offensively they have some nice statistics and rank 31st, 33rd, and 34th in the country in two point shooting percentage, effective field-goal percentage, and overall shooting percentage respectively. They limit tempo and rank in the bottom part of NCAA basketball and field goals attempted per game. Defensively is what this team is all about and they get it done implementing a very solid pack-line defense. I'm a big fan of teams that play this style and Dayton ranks in the top 30 in the country in opponent shooting efficiency, overall opponent shooting percentage, and opponent two point shooting percentage. They have great ball pressure on this side of the ball and are very good at contesting shots.

Rhode Island Rams
Rhode Island is averaging 70.4 points per game while shooting 44.4% from the field, and allowing 64 points per game on 41.9% shooting from the field. On the season they are 8-13-1 overall against the spread, but 7-5 at home. This team is quite similar to Dayton as we look at their pace and their emphasis on defense. Offensively they don't do anything particularly well, but they do shoot 36.8% from beyond the arc. Besides that they are mostly mediocre on this side of the ball, but they do normally and naturally score better at home. In their house this season they have been very tough just losing three games so far, two were close games to two good teams in Valparaiso and Providence earlier in the season.  Then, more recently losing to St. Joseph's a couple weeks ago, a game in which they had a horrible first half. Defensively there is a lot to like about Rhode Island and their chances to pull the upset tonight. They rank 16th in the country in opponent field goals attempted and made per game, and fourth and second in three-pointers attempted and made per game respectively. They have nice defensive statistics across the board highlighted by ranking first in the country allowing just 8.8 opponent assists per game.

This could be a tough spot for Dayton to come in and get a victory. For one of your NCAA basketball picks I recommend backing Rhode Island plus the points in a game that will likely go down to the wire, or a possible shocking upset. Coming into Rhode Island and getting a victory is not an easy task and defensively they have proven themselves to be very tough so far this season, don't sleep on the Rams.
