In 2nd Round NIT action, the GA Tech Yellow Jackets travel from Atlanta, GA to Columbia, SC to match up with the Gamecocks at a Colonial Center court, where S. Carolina is 16-2 SU this season.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets vs. South Carolina Gamecocks
In the Opening Round of NIT play, GA Tech had a dominating home victory against Houston (81-62).  It was Tech’s 7th victory in their last 8 games with their lone loss coming to Virginia in the Quarter Finals of the recently completed ACC CCT Tourney.  S. Carolina also garnered a 1st Round NIT win by a count of (88-66) on this court vs. High Point.  That win came as a 16 point home favorite and was far less impressive, considering that Big South member, High Point, was without its two best players, Brown and Weary, who average 33 PPG.

Tonight, ACC member GA Tech meets SEC member S. Carolina with conference pride on the line. As you will see from the analysis below, although S. Carolina has lost only twice this season on this court to Kentucky and Georgia, we gladly line up with the superior team getting points in this matchup.

The S. Carolina season has been a bit of a mirage.  After a (69-65) escape vs. Vandy on this court on January 9th, the Gamecocks stood 15-0 SU, 11-1 ATS.  It appeared that in the 4th year of the Frank Martin regime that the light bulb had at last turned on for his Gamecocks.  A closer inspection of the early schedule, however, left much to be desired in terms of quality of opposition.

Since that time, S. Carolina has gone just 10-8 SU, 9-9 ATS predominately against an SEC schedule that had a number of post-season qualifiers, who were largely on the Bubble of post-season play. In an effort to stir the pot and prepare his team for the next season, HC Martin recently dismissed 5 non-starters for “conduct detrimental to the good of the team.”  That leaves a thin Gamecock team most vulnerable to a visitor, who could easily be considered to be the superior team.

Betting Analysis
Motivating GA Tech will be playing for well-liked HC Gregory, whose contract has yet to be renewed and will not be re-hired till the end of the season.  With S. Carolina depth an issue, GA Tech figures to use its advantage on the glass, where it has a +7 per game rebounding margin.  GA Tech has also played a considerably harder schedule, as they have battled through the ACC wars.  Their 20-win season has been aided by the production of senior guards, Marcus Georges-Hunt and Adam Smith, who will be playing to continue their college careers.

The Yellow Jackets have shined brightly in this role all season, covering road games in the underdog role against N. Carolina, Pitt, Notre Dame, NC State, Syracuse and Louisville.  No reason why they can’t get an outright victory against a S. Carolina team, who has now been exposed following their weak non-conference schedule and who suddenly lacks depth.
