The N.C. State Wolfpack are off to a quick start to the season. In the Wolfpack's way tonight are the Appalachian State Mountaineers and although the Mountaineers have not played their best basketball, they'll be looking to catch the Wolf Pack with their guard down this Thursday.

Appalachian State Mountaineers (3-5) vs. N.C. State Wolfpack (7-2)

The Pack Are Back

When a respective NCAA Basketball team can average 80 points per game or more, I consider them an "offensive powerhouse" and that's just what the Wolfpack are as they're averaging 80 points per game with the triple threat of Dennis Smith Jr. (18.3 points,5 assists, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.7 steals), Terry Henderson (17.2 points), and Torin Dorn (16.8 points, 7.1 rebounds, 48.3 % 3-point shooting). These players are required to log a ton of minutes as this isn't a deep Wolfpack squad, but one with a great deal of talent.

Henderson is the backbone of the team with his senior leadership and timely scoring. If he's out of the game, it's a 2-minute blow and that's it as N.C. State need's his presence on the court. He's coming off of back to back 20 plus point games in which he shot over 50% from the field and 7 of 15 from 3-point territory. Look for Terry Henderson to have a possible 3rd consecutive 20 point game as the Mountaineers don't pose much of a threat defensively.

Dennis Smith Jr.

He's not ready for the NBA yet and N.C. State will benefit from having freshman guard, Dennis Smith Jr. in the lineup. Smith Jr. leads the Wolfpack in scoring and plays outstanding defense as he's picked many pockets at the collegiate level and N.C. State is only 9 games into the season.

While Smith Jr.'s shot decision making needs improvement, he possesses raw talent that doesn't come along very often. With game experience, he'll  be a big star and his amount of turnovers will decrease while his shooting percentage will increase. With the level of opposition below average in this game for the Wolpack, Dennis Smith Jr. should contribute quite nicely as N.C. State will go as far as he take's them.

Where the Mountaineers are concerned, they played their seasonal matchup against Duke and didn't fare well as they lost 93-58. This was the start of a 3 game losing streak until Appalachian State recently destroyed the Montreat College Cavaliers, 116-57. While defeating the Cavaliers was a feel good win for the Mountaineers, they know that they'll have to play a lot better to compete with teams in the ACC such as N.C. State.

 Ronshad Shabazz

While the Mountaineers have a deeper team than the Wolfpack, they don't possess the talent that N.C. State has. Expect the Wolfpack defense to key in on Mountaineers leading scorer, Ronshad Shabazz, for your NCAA basketball picks. Shabazz is not afraid to shoot the ball and with mixed results. He's averaging 15.5 points per game but is shooting under 40% from the field. I look for him to get his points, but will it be enough?
