Sunday’s only clash of ranked teams takes place in Miami where the Hurricanes are short favorites on the NCAA basketball odds against Florida State.

Florida State vs. Miami

Following another upset-filled Saturday, what might be in store for bettors and fans on Sunday to close out the first week of 2018? For starters, five ranked teams are in action, and two of them are squaring off in Coral Gables where the No. 15/17 Miami Hurricanes entertain their rivals from Tallahassee, the No. 24 Florida State Seminoles.

The 6 PM (ET) tip at Watsco Center will be televised by ESPNU, and the crucial ACC clash finds BetOnline favoring Miami by 3½ after starting the Hurricanes -2½. All outlets currently reporting a total are in agreement at 149½. Both teams enter the tilt with 1-1 conference records, and the winner will remain a game behind the three-way tie at the top of the ACC between Clemson, Notre Dame, and Virginia.

’Canes 1-3 ATS Last 4 Trips To Floor
Leonard Hamilton brings his Seminoles south after an 81-80 win at home over North Carolina earlier this week. It was a tale of two halves against the Tar Heels, FSU building an 11-point halftime lead then holding on in the second stanza when UNC made a 13-5 charge over nearly the final 6:43. The Seminoles were aided by a 14-7 scoring advantage at the free-throw line and avoided a 0-2 start on the ACC schedule despite 15 turnovers to North Carolina’s seven.

Miami split its first two league games on the road, winning and covering at Pittsburgh before being upset at Georgia Tech on Wednesday as 5 point chalk on the NCAA basketball odds. The 64-54 loss to the Yellow Jackets marked the third time in four games the Hurricanes failed to beat the spread, and turnovers did them in along with a poor shooting performance from 3-point range (4-19). Head coach Jim Larrañaga was pleased with his team’s defense but noted the Hurricanes were never able to get things going offensively against Georgia Tech.

Rivalry Notes, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick
This evening’s contest marks the 80th meeting between the schools, the series dating to 1950 and Florida State holding a 44-25 lead in the series after winning and covering both matchups a year ago. Both collisions also stayed ‘under’ the totals to extend that outcome to 4-straight battles. Four of the last five games played in Coral Gables never made it to the totals.

Miami has spent most of the season so far away from home, tonight marking just the sixth game at Watsco for the Hurricanes. They are a perfect 5-0 on their home floor, but all of those games came against patsies with none of them lined. I like Miami but will instead make my free college basketball pick on the series trend in the totals column.
