While much of the nation remains embroiled in the media-fueled and contrived controversy surrounding the College Football Playoffs today, true fans and bettors are focused on the actual games begin played. Without a doubt, Monday’s top college hoops action takes place in the Sunshine State where the unbeaten Florida State Seminoles journey to Gainesville to meet the rival Florida Gators.

ESPN2’s broadcast from Exatech Arena begins at 9 PM (ET), and the Gators are giving up 9 points across the board at SBR’s top-rated sports books. Playing the scoreboard currently means a decision on 163-163½ point totals.

Gators Tops In Nation At 99.5 Points Per Game
While we are impressed with Leonard Hamilton’s team getting off to a 6-0 start, and even happier with how the Seminoles have been covering spreads, we should have a much better gauge to the caliber team they have with this, their toughest matchup so far. It’s their last true road game before the ACC schedule begins, and FSU’s toughest test so far has been against Rutgers at No. 114 on the KenPom chart. Hamilton will have to go at least the next few weeks without Christ Koumadje, the junior 7-4 center on the shelf with a leg injury, and it’s not clear if he’ll be back in time for the early portion of the conference slate that finds the Seminoles opening against Duke, North Carolina, Miami and Louisville.

Florida took the week off after falling to the top-ranked Blue Devils, 87-84, in the finals of a PK80 Bracket. Mike White’s squad was getting 2 points on the NCAA basketball odds to just fall short of the cover, but remained perfect in the totals column with their fourth ‘over’ winner in as many lined games. Jalen Hudson leads the nation’s top-scoring side with a 21.7 PPG average, but it’s senior guard Chris Chiozza consistently stuffing the stats page with 13.2 PPG, 5.7 RPG and 6.8 APG and connecting on nearly 59% of his 3-point tries.

Rivalry Trends, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick
There’s conflicting information on the series history, but it’s agreed that Florida has the all-time bragging rights (43-24 or 41-25). The Seminoles, however, have won the last three matchups and covered the last four. Florida State was a 6½ point underdog its last trip to Gainesville nearly two years ago, and left with a 73-71 upset. The last three encounters went ‘over’ the totals.

The Seminoles have only won two road games in a row once before in this series (1981, 1983), and the Gators have won 12 of their last 13 on this floor. I’m going to get behind the home team with my free college basketball pick.

Season: 8-10 (-2.50)
