Virginia Tech and Virginia square off on Sunday in a heated ACC rivalry game. Will Virginia Tech be able to atone for a 22-point loss at Virginia just a short time ago? Find Out Here.

Virginia Cavaliers vs Virginia Tech Hokies

Virginia Tech will host #12 Virginia on Sunday in a battle between bitter ACC rivals. These teams met in Charlottesville just 11 days ago, and Virginia came away with a decisive 71-49 win. Virginia covered that contest as an 11.5-point home favorite, and the game easily stayed under the total of 134.0.

A consensus of college basketball odds indicates that Virginia is a 7.0-point favorite today, and there’s a posted total of 130.0. At the time of this writing, 54.8% of point spread bets have been made in Virginia, and 60.2% of totals wager are on the under.

 Tale of the Tape

Virginia Tech has been very good at home this season. The Hokies are 12-1 in Blacksburg and include a 14-point win over #18 Duke. Their only home defeat came by a narrow 5-point margin against a very good Notre Dame team.

Virginia has lost each of their last 2 road games. Those defeats were against Syracuse and #2 Villanova.

Virginia Tech has a terrible -8 rebound per game margin during their previous 5 contests. Conversely, Virginia has been dominant on the boards in its last 5 outings, and that’s proven by a sizable +10 rebound per game differential through that stretch. In their first meeting against Virginia Tech on 2/1, Virginia held a substantial 37-22 rebounding advantage.

Final Analysis and Pick

Virginia plays a very deliberate style and seldom sways from being a predominately half court offensive team. In doing so, the Cavaliers are masterful at keeping opponent’s offensive possessions to a minimum and are excellent at limiting their second chance opportunities. After all, opponents of Virginia are averaging just 6 offensive rebound per game this season, and that includes a paltry 3 per contest over the Cavaliers last 5 outings. Additionally, Virginia has gone under the total in 6 of their previous 7 games, and that includes 4 straight staying under the number during conference away games. Each of those 4 road games had a combined 125 points or less being scored. Furthermore, the Cavaliers are allowing a scant 54.0 points per game this season.

Statistics will show that Virginia Tech plays at a moderately fast pace based on their 56 field goal attempts per game. Nevertheless, during their previous 3 games, they’ve slowed their offensive tempo considerably and averaged a mere 44 field goal attempts per contest over that time frame.

In the game played in Charlottesville on 2/1, these teams combined for an extremely low 96 field goal attempts. I look for more of the same on Sunday. This has all the makings of a very low scoring affair, and one of my college basketball picks will be indicative of such.
