North Carolina has put a 3-game skid in the rearview mirror, and the Tar Heels are favored on the NCAA basketball odds to continue their surge against visiting Notre Dame on Monday.

According to the NCAA tournament selection committee, North Carolina is a No. 3 seed and Notre Dame will land an invite to the Big Dance based on star Bonzie Colson returning from injury. While I’m not convinced the Tar Heels should be a Top-4 seed in one of the brackets come Selection Sunday a month from now, they are certainly worthy of making the field. The Fighting Irish still have work to do, however, to punch their ticket.

An upset tonight (7 PM ET) in Chapel Hill would certainly help the Irish, whether Colson can or can’t make it back to close out his solid collegiate career. 5Dimes is giving 9½ points to anyone betting Notre Dame, and the scoreboard target is 151½.

Farrell & Maye Both Coming Off Career Highs

Getting Matt Farrell back is at least a big step in the right direction for Mike Brey’s gang. The senior missed a few games in January with a sprained ankle before sitting out a couple more with a bone bruise, but has returned to play in Notre Dame’s last three. Farrell scored a career-high 28 this past weekend against Florida State, helping the Irish to an easier than expected 84-69 win over the Seminoles as 1-point home chalk on the NCAA basketball odds.

The win over Duke last Thursday might prove to be the springboard the Tar Heels needed. They followed that up with a 96-89 decision Saturday in Raleigh over rival NC State, Roy Williams watching his club make up for 19 turnovers by dominating the glass. Luke Maye was outstanding for North Carolina, pouring in 27 of his career-best 33 points in the second half while grabbing 17 boards for his 13th double-double of the season.

Rivalry History, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick

The Fighting Irish are out for a little payback after the Tar Heels came into South Bend about a month ago to hand Notre Dame a tough 69-68 loss. Playing as 5-point underdogs without both Colson and Farrell, the Irish suffered through a couple of 4-minute droughts in the second half, the last coming with six minutes left and a 6-point lead. The victory left UNC with a 23-7 lead in the series and with a 4-game win streak in process. Notre Dame has covered six of the last eight, with ‘under’ bettors getting paid in 7 of 9.

This is the third game in five days for the Tar Heels, so we’ll get to see how good the conditioning program is in Chapel Hill. We should also get to see some offense from both sides, which is why my free college basketball pick is on the ‘over.’
