There’s more than just the NFL to bet on today. Tennessee takes on North Carolina in college basketball this afternoon, and we have it covered. Join us in reading this betting preview and get your picks ready!

Tennessee Volunteers vs North Carolina Tar Heels

Tennessee will look to pull off a huge upset on Sunday in Chapel Hill against #7 North Carolina. The opening tip is slated for 5:00 PM ET and it will be televised by ESPN. This is the first meeting between these schools in basketball since 2006.

At the time of this writing (9:00 AM ET), the college basketball betting odds at Pinnacle has North Carolina as an 18.0-point favorite, and there’s a posted total of 158.0. They’ve long been considered to be one of the best sportsbooks.

Tennessee Seeks Early Season Signature Win

Tennessee is off to an uninspiring 4-3 start to the season and has yet to register what’s considered as a quality win. The closest they’ve come in that regard was a 23-point rout of Georgia Tech. However, Georgia Tech (5-3) isn’t close to being a nationally ranked team at this juncture. The Volunteers did manage to cover as underdogs in losses to #24 Oregon and #17 Wisconsin.

National Championship Contenders

North Carolina has picked up right where they left off a season ago when they advanced to the NCAA Tournament Championship Game. They’re currently 9-1, and for the most part have been dominant in doing so. The Tar Heels have seen 8 of their 9 wins come by 15-points or more, and a lone exception was this past Wednesday’s 9-point home victory over Davidson. The only tarnish on their resume was a loss suffered at #9 Indiana.

Common Opponents

North Carolina and Tennessee have faced 3 common opponents this season. Tennessee was upset at home by 13-points in its season opener against UT-Chattanooga. Meanwhile, North Carolina crushed Chattanooga by 40. Both Tennessee and North Carolina played in this season’s Maui Invitational. Although they didn’t face each other in that event, both played Chaminade and Wisconsin. North Carolina routed Chaminade by 43-points, and Tennessee defeated the host team by just 14. Additionally, North Carolina knocked off Wisconsin by 15, and Tennessee lost to the Badgers by 12. When assessing each team’s results versus those 3 common opponents, it obviously points to North Carolina as being vastly superior.

Final Opinion and Pick

Tennessee will hang tough early on in this game, but eventually North Carolina’s depth, size, and overall athleticism will wear them down. Besides, North Carolina was flat against Davidson in their previous outing. That was especially evident during the 2nd half of that contest. It’s highly unlikely the Tar Heels will turn in consecutive unimpressive performances, and particularly on its own home floor. I’m going to lay the sizable number in this game for one of my college basketball picks on Sunday.
