Both teams are taking a step up in competition when Old Dominion takes on Purdue at the Hall of Fame tipoff tournament in Connecticut. Check our free college basketball pick here.

Betting Odds
college basketball odds have set the total for this game at 137, and in my opinion that's just a little bit too high for these two good defensive teams. For one of my college basketball picks of the day I will be taking under the total on this early game. Go now and get under.

Old Dominion Monarchs
Offensively Old Dominion is averaging 74.3 points per game, shooting 47.6% from the field, and 37.5% from beyond the arc. They are 3-0 but this will be their first real test against a legitimate Division I program in the Boilermakers. Head Coach Jeff Jones knows he has a solid team this year led by possible Conference USA player of the year Trey Freeman.

Defensively they have allowed 52 points per game, 32.5% shooting from the field, and 22.9% from beyond the arc. This is the guts of this team and they rank as one of the best teams defensively in the country so far this season. It is not a fluke though as they are a team that consistently stresses the importance of defense. Last year they started the season 13-1 and kept all but three opponents under 64 points during that early part of the 2014-15 season.

Purdue Boilermakers
Purdue is averaging 94.7 points per game, 53.7% shooting from the field, and 44.3% from distance. These are some of the best numbers in the country and head coach Matt Painter has a lot of weapons at his disposal this season highlighted by the surprising signing of Caleb Swanigan who already leads the team in rebounds at 10 per game. They are also led by senior guard Rapheal Davis and sophomore center Isaac Haas who it seems for now has replaced senior A.J. Hammons.

Defensively Purdue is allowing 60 points per game, 33% shooting from the field, and 27.9% shooting from beyond the arc. These are all good numbers and they seem to have stepped up so far this season considering they were ranked ninth in scoring defense last year in the Big Ten. Expect Purdue to play better on both sides of the court this season.

This has all the makings of a defensive battle, and for one of your selections today I recommend taking under the total of 137 in this matchup. Both teams are taking a step up in class so expect a real battle  the first game of this tournament.
