Ross Benjamin breaks down Sunday’s college basketball contest between Cincinnati and Connecticut. Don’t make a move on this game without first reading this betting preview article which culminates with one of his college basketball free picks.

Bearcats and Huskies Big East Brawl

The Connecticut Huskies (14-15) will host the #18 Cincinnati Bearcats (26-4) on Sunday. There’s a scheduled opening tip of 12:00 PM ET and the game will be televised nationally on CBS.

At the time of this writing (3/4), a consensus of college basketball betting odds indicates that Cincinnati is a 5.0-point favorite, and there’s a posted total of 126.5. These teams met in earlier this season, and Cincinnati came away with an 82-68 win and cover on their home floor.

Bearcats Ugly Road Games

Since Mick Cronin took over as head coach at Cincinnati, the Bearcats away games have been less than entertaining to watch. During Cronin’s ongoing tenure, Cincinnati is 72-43 (62.6%) under the total on the road. Furthermore, if Cincinnati was a favorite in those contests, they went to 32-11 (74.4%) under the total, and there were only a combined 122.8 points scored per game.

Cincinnati has gone under the total in all 8 of their conference road games this season. As a matter of fact, their last 4 conference away contests produced a mere 109.3 points scored per game. The Bearcats are allowing a meager 56.6 points per game on the road, and they’ve held their opponents to 36.7% shooting while doing so. Additionally, Cincinnati has limited 6 of their last 7 opponents to 49 field goal attempts or less.

Huskies Defensive Pride

This has surely been a down year for a Connecticut basketball program with such a rich tradition. The Huskies problems have mostly come on the offensive side of the floor. Nonetheless, they’ve been more than respectable defensively, and that’s especially been the case at home. Connecticut is allowing only 61.1 points per game at home and has held opponents to a paltry 36.9% shooting during those outings.

Cincinnati Bearcats vs Connecticut Huskies

I don’t foresee a repeat of the first meeting between these teams. That game was played a much quicker pace than either team likes to play at. I look for both teams to have far fewer possessions than they enjoyed in their first go around, and for this game to be a much lower scoring affair. One of my Sunday college basketball picks will be reflective of that prediction.
