Today, we are heading to Charleston for the Gildan Charleston Classic. In the early matchup, Auburn takes on Indiana State followed by Old Dominion battling Temple.

Auburn vs. Indiana State

Oddsmakers have come out making up-tempo Auburn a decent 7.5 favorite in this spot and for my NCAA basketball pick, I’m going to take Auburn to cover and win by double digits. It seems that Bruce Pearl has started to turn around this Auburn program which definitely has not been due to their defense. Last season they ranked 321 in scoring defense and 213 and opponent shooting percentage from the field. This fits their style quite well and is not surprising as they can put up points in a hurry. Although their lack of defense is a concern I have a hard time believing Indiana State’s going to be able to keep up with them. This Auburn team had 18 wins last year which is the second highest when total in the past 14 years and they return a nice core with guys that got some serious minutes. I understand some people might want to back Indiana State considering they upset Indiana, but I think that was more a byproduct of Indiana being a team that will struggle this season.

Old Dominion vs. Temple

This will be Temple’s first game of the season and oddsmakers have come out making them a -4 favorite versus the slow pace defensive minded Old Dominion Monarchs. This game should be a bit of a grind so for my pick I’m going to take Old Dominion plus the points to keep this game very interesting and perhaps pull off the upset. So far on the season, Old Dominion has beaten two scrappy mid-majors winning versus Towson and at James Madison. I really like this team and their head coach Jeff Jones who so far has a solid 89-51 record. The Monarchs have some good guard play and because of their style, they will always be tough on the defensive end and on the glass. Temple finished .500 last year overall and 7-11 in conference play. Their backcourt is set but there are still some question marks as to the health of some of their contributors in Josh Brown and Trey Lowe. They will be pretty tough in the interior with senior Obi Enechionyia, and they will always be coached well under Fran Dunphy. Still, with this being their first game of the year I like the value taking the points and going against them.
