It’s Senior Night at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse, and Butler is favored on the NCAA basketball odds to beat Creighton in the Bulldogs’ final home game.

Jockeying for position in upcoming conference tournaments and looking to impress members of the NCAA selection committee will be the theme the next week or two in college basketball arenas. The top two slots in the Big East tourney already belong to Villanova and Xavier, in one order or the other, but it’s a mess behind that pair, where we find Creighton and Butler a half-game apart for the No. 3 seed.

Tuesday’s tilt at Hinkle Fieldhouse could end up deciding who claims third in the regular season, and the winner might also be able to slide up one notch at the Big Dance, where ESPN’s bracket expert Joe Lunardi presently has both the Bluejays and Bulldogs as 7 seeds. The 7 PM (ET) contest is the second meeting of the season between the two, and a quick check of the NCAA basketball odds board finds Butler laying 4½ with 157 for the total.

’Jays Fail To Cover Last 5 Big East Affairs

Round 1 went to Creighton in Omaha on Jan. 9, the Bluejays building a big first-half lead on their way to an 85-74 decision. BetOnline closed the ‘Jays -6, the final falling just short of a 159½-point total. A close game the first eight minutes, Creighton broke it open to take a 17-point lead into the locker room with Marcus Foster scoring 21 of his game-high 23 in the initial 20 minutes. It was the third consecutive win for the Bluejays, who own a 10-6 lead in the rivalry and have won 2 of 4 Big East battles in Indianapolis, the ‘under’ cashing three of those matchups.

Greg McDermott’s squad has since gone 4-5 in conference action since beating Butler about six weeks ago, 2-3 on the road in that stretch. They reach Indy off an upset loss to Marquette at home this past weekend, the Bluejays blowing a 15-point lead in the second half to fall 90-86 as 6-point home favorites. Creighton shot well enough to win, sinking 32 of 57 from the field, but was outmuscled on the glass (33-22) and allowed the Golden Eagles too many open shots.

Final Home Game Of Season For Butler

Butler stopped a 3-game skid Saturday with an impressive 69-54 win vs Providence. Favored by 8½, the Bulldogs trailed coming out of the locker room before taking charge with a 14-2 run and then relying on their defense. Kelan Martin scored 19 for LaVall Jordan’s gang after the Friars held the senior to a season-low 6 in their first meeting.

This will be the last time Martin and fellow senior Tyler Wideman play at Hinkle as Butler takes eight days off before closing the season at St. John’s and Seton Hall next week. They’ll want to make it a memorable win, which I believe they’ll get. Still, I think the safer play is on the ‘under,’ and that’s the direction I’m going with my free college basketball pick.
