Our NCAAB handicapper, Mark Lathrop, is 4-0 on the season and just called the 45 point romp by Notre Dame last night. In this spot, he covers the publicly maligned UCLA against a lower class opponent.

South Carolina State Bulldogs vs UCLA Bruins

This may be the best line I’ve seen in a month.

The maligned UCLA Bruins host their second home game after returning from China, where an international incident broke out after a bout of stupidity from 3 of their best players. The Bruins were able to win after those players were missing against Georgia Tech anyway. That familiar resilience was tested unexpectedly by Central Arkansas on Wednesday, as the relatively small school from the Southland Conference took them into overtime. It’s not going well for the UCLA Bruins right now. But since we are here to handicap a basketball game, things aren’t going well at all for the South Carolina State Bulldogs either.

The Bulldogs are coming into their 4th game in a row on the road to start the season, and this road trip can easily be described as a disaster. First, they lost to Wisconsin by 35 points, where their slogging offense coughed up 85 points if by accident. That loss is understandable against a team with the pedigree of Wisconsin. Next was Boston College, in which they promptly let themselves get back-doored and dunked on in the first play and continued to suck for the other 39 minutes, losing the game 91-52.

The South Carolina State coach was “really disappointed with our guys” after that loss, with reports that he yelled at them for 30 minutes after the closing bell. Now the team is galvanized, you think, how could they possibly come out flat against Yale? With Yale down two of their starters surely wouldn’t you think this would be a bounce-back spot? Nope: South Carolina State was down 32 points in the first half to Yale. Down two of their starters.

The line on this game against UCLA opened up with the Bruins as 31 point favorites. Yes, the UCLA Bruins are down three freshmen stars, but are the Bruins - right now - still better than Yale? Down two of their starters? When they haven't flown across the country? Yale in that spot could cover against South Carolina State, and so will UCLA, making the Bruins at -31 my Friday NCAAB Pick.
