Big Ten powers collide as Minnesota travels to Mackey Arena to take on Purdue. Let's analyze this matchup and see what the college basketball odds makers are dealing as we look to cash a ticket in this conference clash.

Minnesota vs. Purdue

If you have been backing the Boilermakers in your college basketball picks recently then you have been fattening your wallet and making your bookie cry. Purdue (12-2 SU, 8-3 ATS) has been a veritable ATM during the month of December as they have ripped off seven consecutive victories and covered in all six lined contests. The game in which they defeated little known Norfolk State 91-45 may have counted on their regular season record but the college basketball odds makers wanted no part of it as it was off the board.

Minnesota (12-3 SU, 7-5 ATS) comes into this one fresh off a gut-wrenching 75-74 loss to Michigan State as 5 ½-point home chalk. What made the defeat even worse was the fact that the Gophers flexed their muscles early and ended the first half with a 39-26 advantage. However, the Spartans would not bow and evened the score at the end of regulation. With just 10 seconds remaining in overtime, MSU's Alvin Ellis III connected on successive free throws to move his club ahead by one. That was all they needed as Minnesota could not score on their final possession.

Minnesota and Purdue hail from the Big Ten and enter this contest with identical 12-2 overall marks, however, Minnesota lost their conference opener to Michigan State while the Boilermakers kicked off their Big Ten schedule in their last outing with an 89-67 win over Iowa in which they rather easily covered the 14 ½-point impost. The Golden Gophers trail the Boilermakers in two of the three major statistical categories such as:

  • Points Scored: Purdue 84.6 PPG (23rd) vs. Minnesota 76.9 PPG (117th)
  • Points Allowed: Purdue 63.6 PPG (31st) vs. Minnesota 65.4 PPG (62nd)
  • Rebounds: Purdue 39.9 RPG (47th) vs. Minnesota 40.9 (22nd)

The Sharp Side

Purdue not only has a more prolific offense but they simply match up well against the overachieving Minnesota Golden Gophers. Isaac Haas is a 7'2" monster in the middle and is nicely complemented by power forward Caleb Swanigan. The guard rotation has blossomed this season with juniors P.J. Thompson and Dakota Mathias flourishing and freshman Carsen Edwards coming along quicker than expected. The bench is also deep with head coach Matt Painter seamlessly rotating in eight players in their thrashing of Iowa.

Purdue is averaging 84.1 PPG at home compared to Minnesota scoring an average of 61.5 PPG in their two road games this season. Purdue is 8-1 ATS this season as a favorite and 34-18 ATS as a favorite over the last three seasons while Minnesota is 11-19 ATS when cast in the underdog role over their last three seasons. In addition, Purdue has to be thinking about last season's meeting when the venue was Minnesota. The Boilermakers were installed as 14-point road favorites but managed to escape with just a 68-64 victory. This time the teams play in Purdue's gymnasium and the Boilermakers will be ready for a blowout.
