Life is pretty good right now for Matt Painter and the Boilermakers. Purdue is currently sporting a 17-game win streak, gaining ground on Villanova and Virginia in the 1-2 slots of the polls and sitting a perfect 10-0 on top of the Big Ten standings heading into Wednesday’s matchup against the struggling Maryland Terrapins.

A rematch from nearly two months ago when the schools opened their conference schedules against each other, the Big Ten Network will carry this 8:30 PM (ET) from Mackey Arena. A quick glance at offerings from Bookmaker finds Purdue favored by 14 and 149 for the total.

Things have been going south for Mark Turgeon and the Terps since the Big Ten slate began in earnest earlier this month. Maryland has dropped its last two, and five of the last seven games, to fall into the second division of the standings with four of the recent setbacks coming on the road. The Terrapins started 2018 with four consecutive ‘over’ winners before each of the last four outings failed to make it to the totals.

Purdue has survived a couple of recent scares against Michigan and Indiana, finding ways to win both contests but unable to cover the NCAA basketball odds either game. In the 92-88 win over the the Wolverines, both teams shot very well as each hit better than 60% from the field and more than 50% from 3-point range. The Boilermakers used a 19-5 scoring edge at the free throw line to avoid the upset as 11 point home chalk. They extended the nation’s longest win streak last Sunday at rival Indiana with a 74-67 decision, closing on a 9-3 run and getting a 2nd-straight clutch performance from senior Isaac Haas who combined for 50 points in last week’s triumphs.

Series Trends, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick

Purdue’s 80-75 victory in College Park on December 1 gave the Boilermakers a 3-2 lead in the still very young rivalry. All five games have come as Big Ten foes, and the Boilermakers have now won the last two. Purdue covered the December meeting as 3½ point chalk, and the final slipped past a 147 point total in the final minute. Maryland’s only win in West Lafayette came in the very first clash about three years ago, a 69-60 final with the Terps getting 2 points.

Being a cheap old bastard that I am and given how the Boilers haven’t been able to cover smaller spreads their last two contests, laying 14 is not my usual M.O., but that’s where my free college basketball pick will be made in this one.
