This NCAA basketball handicapper breaks down the Big 12 Tournament 1st round matchup between TCU & Kansas State. We urge you to read this revealing betting preview article which culminates with a selection on one of the sides.
Big 12 Tourney First Round Clash TCU/Kansas St.
The #8 seed Kansas State Wildcats will square off against #9 TCU on Wednesday in the first round of the Big 12 Conference Tournament. The opening tip is slated for 7:00 PM ET at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, Missouri. According to the college basketball betting odds at BetOnline, Kansas State is a 1.0 point favorite. These teams split their two regular season encounters with the home team winning on each occasion.
Tale of Two Seasons for TCU
The TCU Horned Frogs began the 2014-2015 campaign by going 13-0, and all of those wins came versus nonconference opponents. Then the harsh reality of starting their Big 12 campaign set in. TCU went a dismal 4-14 in conference action to finish the regular season at 17-14. The season statistics will indicate that TCU was a very good defensive team, allowing an average of 62.2 points per game, and held their opponents to only 40% shooting from the field. However, they allowed 81-points or more in three of their last five games, and have gone over the NCAA Basketball Odds total in six of the previous seven. The Horned Frogs also concluded the regular season on a three game losing streak.
Not a Banner Year in Manhattan, Kansas
The Kansas State Wildcats enter their conference tournament with a 15-16 record, and that includes 8-10 in Big 12 action. The Wildcats finished the regular season by going under the total in nine of their last twelve games. As opposed to their first round opponent, Kansas State wasn’t as dominant in the nonconference portion of their schedule, going 7-6 to start the year. However, they played a much more difficult nonconference slate than TCU faced. Their most noteworthy win outside the Big 12 came over Purdue. They also lost by a narrow 4-point margin on the road versus Arizona who is currently ranked 5th in the country.
The slight disparity in overall records between these Big 12 rivals is a bit deceiving. TCU played an extremely soft schedule in November and December compared to what Kansas State faced during that time. What’s more of a true indicator, the Wildcats finished with a 4.0 game edge during conference play over the Horned Frogs. Although the TCU basketball program has made some positive strides this season, they still have a ways to go. I’m siding with the more proven and higher seeded side for one of my NCAA Basketball picks on Wednesday.
