As we head into the month of December we are also going to head to the Big Ten for two good matchups with Wisconsin visiting Penn State, and Iowa traveling to take on Indiana. Oddsmakers have made the home teams the natural favorite in this spot but could there be some value on backing the underdogs?

Wisconsin at Penn State

On their records alone you think that Penn State would be close to a double-digit favorite with Wisconsin coming in at 3-5 and Penn State sitting at 7-2. That is not the case however as oddsmakers have made Penn State a pretty small -5 favorite. For my NCAA pick in this matchup I’m going to back Wisconsin to take this game down the wire and give Penn State all they want. Wisconsin has had a brutal schedule so far this year having had to play the likes of Virginia, UCLA, Baylor, and Xavier. So the fact that they don’t have a winning record is not too shocking. What could motivate Penn State to winning this game going away is the fact they’ve lost Wisconsin nine straight times, and the Badgers come in with some pretty pedestrian statistics shooting just 45% from the floor and allowing opponents shoot almost 46%. While Penn State comes in with better numbers at shooting almost 47%, and allowing 42%. All that being said though I think the strength of schedule comes into play with those percentages and I really like how Wisconsin matches up with this good Penn State team. I have a hard time believing the Badgers lose this game by a large margin.

Archie Miller had a rough start of the year with Indiana but I like how hard his team played versus Duke. Tonight oddsmakers have made his Hoosiers a -4.5 favorite, but for my NCAA picks I like Iowa to take this game to the buzzer. These teams split last year but the dynamic is different with Miller at the helm of Indiana so this will probably be played as a little bit of a more controlled pace despite Iowa liking to get up and down the floor. Even with that being said though this Iowa team I think is a tough matchup for Indiana and should come in with the mindset that they can win this game straight up. Iowa returns a decent core of players and currently are shooting 48% from the floor and almost 40% from distance. What I like though is on the other side of the ball they’ve also been decent allowing opponents to shoot about 43%. Indiana has been able to score shooting the ball at 49% overall, but their defensive statistics are a little worrisome as opponents are shooting 46% against them and almost 41% from distance. It is natural that they are favored at home, but there is no reason for me to think Iowa can’t keep this game interesting.
