This time of year is tough sledding for making college hoops selections because many schools have first semester finals this week and the schedule is extremely light like it is today.

That makes it tough trying to round up two underdogs against the college basketball odds, but I'm a professional handicapper and writer and did the research to find the two best possible choice I could and will give my reasoning for both.

Coming off a nice sweep last week for college basketball picks choosing underdogs, I would like to continue that for those reading this today.

Wobbly Wisconsin a Vulnerable Favorite

With the Badgers at 4-7 (3-7 ATS) to start the season, you have to do back 20 years to find the last time a Wisconsin team had a losing record on the season. At the present time we are not suggesting that will happen, but if you have seen the Badgers play this year, they are not only inexperienced, the talent level does not appear close to the numerous teams that went fairly deep into the NCAA Tournament.

This Badgers squad has no distinct characteristics, unless 'ordinary' is viewed as a positive. Wisconsin is averaging 66.1 PPG on 44.3 percent shooting. Behind the arc they convert 33 percent and they are -1 in rebound margin.

Western Kentucky (6-3, 5-2 ATS) is thought of as Top 4 crew in Conference USA and they beat Purdue and SMU in Maui and covered the spread against now top-ranked Villanova. All of their losses would be considered reasonable with only one starter back and they have good athleticism and average 78.4 PPG.

The Hilltoppers are catching 7.5 points in Madison for this FS1 televised tilt at 8:00 Eastern and Wisconsin is just 13-29 ATS at home after three straight games forcing opponent to commit 11 or less turnovers and are missing backcourt players guards D'Mitrik Trice and Kobe King, who are out with injuries.

Free NCAAB Pick: Western Kentucky +7.5

Portland State Could Fly With Ducks

Oregon (7-3, 4-5 ATS) has not hosted Portland State (8-2, 8-0 ATS) in three years, but since 1997, these programs have met 10 times over that span. The Ducks are coming off Final Four appearance and are retooling after heavy personnel losses. While Oregon is trying to become a more cohesive unit, the numbers tell us this is a typical Dana Altman coached team that takes good shots (47.3%), finds the open three-point shooter (10 made per game), plays terrific defense (37.8%) and crashed the glass with a +7 rebound margin.

Portland State is playing much better than a team that was expected to be in the lower tier in the Big Sky and is averaging 91.1 PPG. They covered the spread in losses to Duke and Butler and have beaten Stanford and Utah State and are 4-0 SU and ATS in true road games. Senior guard Bryce Canda has been a stud and has teammates around him capable of big nights.

Portland State is on the receiving end of 14.5 points and if Oregon does not take them serious on this Pac-12 telecast, the Vikings will cover.

Free NCAAB Pick: Portland State +14.5
