Hogs-Cyclones: The Match-Up
Iowa State returns three starters this season from a team that went 28-8 last year, won the Big 12 tournament and made it to the second weekend of the NCAA tournament. They lost two guys (Melvin Ejim and DeAndre Kane) who combined to average 35 points and 15 boards per game last season, but added several transfers who are expected to step into productive roles.

Iowa State opened this season with a 93-82 victory over Oakland, but couldn’t cover as a 20-point favorite. The Cyclones then beat Georgia State 81-58, covering at -10, and Alabama 84-74, covering at -7. But ISU then lost to Maryland 72-63 as a five-point favorite, shooting just 30 percent from the field, making just six of 27 shots from beyond the arc.

The 'Clones then bounced back to beat Lamar Tuesday 96-59, shooting 52 percent from the floor.

Arkansas also returns three starters this season from a team that went 22-12 last year but missed the NCAA tournament for the fifth year in a row. At 6-0 this season the Hogs are off to a good start in their effort to return to the Big Dance.

Arkansas began this season with a 97-79 victory over Alabama State, but couldn't cover as a 24-point favorite. The Hogs then beat Wake Forest 83-53, covering at -13, then defeated Delaware State 99-71 in a game that wasn't lined. Arkansas then beat SMU 78-72, winning SU as a four-point dog, then beat North Texas 89-73 but couldn't cover at -26. Last time out, last Sunday, the Hogs beat Iona 94-77, covering at -12.

The Razorbacks only led by four points at the half Sunday, but pulled away in the second half for the victory and the cover. Arkansas only shot 41 percent from the field and 65 percent from the line, but held the Gaels to 43 percent shooting.

Last time out Iowa State started two seniors, two juniors and a sophomore, while Arkansas started a senior, three juniors and a sophomore.

These two programs have no recent history with each other; the last time they met came back in 1999, a 77-71 Iowa State victory.

Hogs-Cyclones Free Pick
Mayor Hoiberg has ISU headed toward Big 12 contention, but this looks like a tough match-up, against an athletic Arkansas team. And for games we expect to be close throughout we like the idea of having a touchdown in our pocket. So for our free NCAA basketball picks we'll go with the road-dog Hogs in this spot.
