League play has begun across the country in NCAA basketball. Can both of the road favorites cover the number, or will the underdogs pull a couple of upset?

Oakland vs Milwaukee

Oakland has been a little bit up and down at the start of the season but odds makers have made them a decent favorite in this spot. For my NCAA pick though I’m going to back Milwaukee at home +3.5 to take this game down to the wire. Oakland comes in as the pick to win the Horizon league but I think they will have trouble tonight with their up-tempo style on the road. Although their offensive numbers are decent shooting 44.6% from the floor and 36.5% from distance, on the defensive side they have really struggled. Oakland is allowing opponents to shoot 46.8% overall along with allowing 30.8 field goals made per game which ranks them outside the top 300 teams defensively. Although Milwaukee is not picked to do much this season I like their pickup of Pat Baldwin from Northwestern as their head coach and they have shown at times to play some decent defense allowing opponents to shoot just 44.4% overall on the season. More impressively though is they are allowing just 23.4 field goals made per game.

New Mexico State vs UC Irvine

If people did not know about New Mexico State they sure know bottom now after really good showing in Hawaii this past week. It makes sense that odds makers have made them the road favorite but for my NCAA pick once again I will back the home underdog in this spot. Considering the travel alone this a difficult situation for New Mexico State to go in and play their first league game on the road against an underrated UC Irvine team. On the season Irvine has struggled so far but most of those struggles have come on the road and against some pretty good competition. Over the past couple weeks they have dropped some tight contests most notably at a very good Nevada team, and always tough St. Mary’s. Although New Mexico stated been very good on both sides the ball and most likely will win the Big West this game should go down to the wire and odds makers have made the number small for reason. Defensively UC Irvine has been very good this season allowing opponents shoot just 41.6% from the floor. Don’t sleep on a feisty UC Irvine team at home to make this game interesting.
