For Monday basketball’s card we are going to take a look at a couple of underdogs, one from the NBA and one in NCAA hoops. Oddsmakers have come out with some small lines for these two live home underdogs in Brooklyn and Boston College. Can the home teams stay within the number?

NBA New York at Brooklyn

Although New York has won both contests this season I think this a good spot for Brooklyn to take this game to the wire. Oddsmakers have made the visiting New York Knicks a -2.5 favorite, but that line is pretty small for reason and for my NBA pick I will take Brooklyn plus the points. New York is coming off a very tough overtime loss to New Orleans and it could be difficult for them to get back up and take on a Brooklyn team that has played good basketball this past week. Although statistically, for the most part, the Knicks are the better team, Brooklyn has shown the ability to hang with the league’s best recently losing to Boston by two, Washington by six, and taking the Toronto Raptors to overtime to lose by just one. What I really like about this Brooklyn team is currently they rank seventh and eighth in the NBA in opponent shooting efficiency and opponent three-point shooting percentage. They also should be able to knock down their share of three-pointers as the Knicks just rank in the middle the league in defending from beyond the arc and the Nets are averaging almost 12 three-pointers per game which ranks them third in the NBA.

The free pick: Brooklyn +2.5

NCAA Basketball Florida State at Boston College

This is not the Boston College team of years past and they have shown the ability to hang with good and even great teams this season. Oddsmakers still have made Florida State a small favorite in this spot which makes sense, but for my NCAA pick I will take Boston College plus the points. The Golden Eagles have been good in ACC play except for one terrible game at North Carolina in which they got blown out. They are just 2-3 in league but outside the blowout two of their losses were just by four to a good Clemson team, and then by one at one of the best teams in the country in Virginia. They have beat Duke and Wake Forest both at home, and I expect for them to give Florida State all they want. Florida State is also sitting at 2-3 in the league, but their three losses have all come by single digits, and this should be another grind. Currently, the Golden Eagles rank inside the top 100 teams in most offensive categories and all their offensive statistics are much improved from last season. On a neutral floor, Florida State probably wins this game but I will give the nod to a scrappy Boston College team getting points at home.

The free pick: Boston College +3
Best Lines are at 5Dimes (-105)
