Conflicting post-season CCT handicapping trends take center stage when Florida St. and VA Tech meet in the “Donkey Round” of the ACC Conference Tourney at the Verizon Center.

Florida State vs. Virginia Tech 9:30PM ET
With the difference in the seeds and Florida St. being installed as a small favorite, VA Tech is a highly-profitable GAP (in the seeds) DOG. Any time a full season of play has gone by and seeds have been set, you can understand how it is profitable to play the superior team in the underdog role.

Betting Preview
Working against our “gap dog” is the Hokies’ recent run to end the regular season. There is little doubt that VA Tech has been the surprise team of the ACC. Little was expected of the Hokies in the 2nd season under former Marquette HC Buzz Williams. After all, Tech was just 11-22 SU last season and just 2-16 SU in ACC play. But that would be discounting the coaching talents of Williams. With the edition of transfers, LeDay (S. Florida) and Allen (Maryland), Williams has molded 3 returning starters into a viable NCAA team. In fact, the winner of this contest will be under serious consideration for inclusion in the ACC field. Should that be the Hokies, it would be hard to leave them out, as they are playing their best ball of the season and would be 3 games above .500 in what is arguably the best league in the country. In addition, few have been hotter than these Hokies since the 1st of the year, when they have posted a 14-4 ATS mark, including 5-0 SU ATS down the stretch. That all started with the (83-73) home win vs. Florida St. and concluded with a trio of outright underdog victories to close the regular season against Wake Forest, Pitt and Miami, FL. From a technical perspective, however, it has been profitable to play against any CCT team, who has won and covered 3 consecutive games as underdog. The fact that Williams has long been a great underdog coach and is 11-3 ATS as pick or dog, may belie that thinking.

Final Analysis
A victory against Florida St. would be won against a superior athletic team. The Seminoles, under respected 14thyear HC Hamilton, have immense size, length and athletic ability (most notably, in frosh guard, pro-prospects, Bacon and Beasley) with veteran floor leader, Rathan-Mayes, this team has immense upward potential. Unfortunately for Florida St., that talent may be a year away from reaching that potential (or at least, if they go far in the NIT this season).

For now, we will back the “gap dog,” who is the hotter team whose time is now! I invite you to put the NCAA Basketball odds in your favor and join me in my NCAA Basketball pick on VA Tech tonight.
