The West Virginia Mountaineers have been overlooked all year, but they’re giving too many points to be the right NCAAB pick this Thursday against the Bucknell Bison in the West Region.

No. 13 Bucknell vs. No. 4 West Virginia

West Region, Buffalo, Thursday, 2:54 p.m. ET

There wasn’t a lot of chatter around the West Virginia Mountaineers this season. That’s what happens when you play third banana to both Kansas and Baylor in the Big 12. Too bad, because the Mountaineers are a quality team – just not a profitable college basketball pick at 26-8 SU and 13-15-1 ATS.

People could be talking about No. 4 West Virginia after Thursday’s first-round game (2:45 p.m. ET, CBS) with the No. 13 Bucknell Bison. But they might be talking about how the Mountaineers got tripped up by one of this year’s most dangerous March Madness underdogs. The Bison crushed the NCAAB odds this year at 26-8 SU and 7-1 ATS, and they’re 14-point puppies against WVU as we go to press.

Never Been A Better Time To Bison

Surely that’s too many points. FiveThirtyEight has West Virginia winning this matchup 90 percent of the time, which works out to around -12.5 at Wizard of Odds. And Ken Pomeroy says the Mountaineers are close to 18 points better than Bucknell over 100 possessions; they’ll fit in about 70 possessions on Thursday, so that’s another -12.5 if I’ve carried the one correctly.

We’re also looking at Bucknell’s hot shooting, with four different players posting double-digits per game. The Bison dominated the Patriot League both inside and outside, unlike the Mountaineers, who do their best scoring in the paint. This is a high-variance situation with all those Bison 3-pointers and the possibility that they’ll cough up the ball against West Virginia’s perimeter defense, but Bucknell certainly looks like the right pick at these odds.
