Thursday’s only clash of ranked teams takes place in the desert, and we have a free college basketball pick for the rivalry matchup between Arizona and Arizona State.

Arizona State was playing about as well as anyone else in the country when the non-conference schedule was finished. In fact, Bobby Hurley couldn’t have had the Sun Devils in any better shape heading into the Pac-12 fixture than with a 12-0 record. Among those dozen victories were dubyas against Xavier in the Las Vegas Invitational and a huge upset of Kansas inside Allen Fieldhouse.

Then came a short road trip to Tucson and a date with rival Arizona, the Wildcats putting an end to Arizona State’s unblemished record and sending the Sun Devils into a dive that saw them drop six of the first 10 league contests. Hurley and ASU can now exact a little revenge when Arizona travels to Tempe for Thursday’s 9 PM (ET) tip at Wells Fargo Arena. BetOnline is offering the Sun Devils as 1 point home chalk with 162 for the scoreboard target.

Wildcats Going For 3rd-Straight Season Sweep Of Sun Devils

Arizona beating Arizona State is nothing new in a rivalry that began more than 100 years ago. The Wildcats’ 84-78 decision roughly seven weeks ago pushed a 6 point spread on the NCAA basketball odds, and marked their 5th-straight in the series to leave UA with a 151-82 lead. Sean Miller is 14-5 against the Sun Devils since taking over in Tucson while Hurley is winless in five tries against the Wildcats. Last year’s matchup in Tempe stayed well ‘under’ a 152½ point total after the two previous meetings at Wells Fargo Arena went ‘over.’

Arizona has a 2-game lead in the Pac-12 race, but there are eight teams still within three games of the Wildcats should they stumble before the tournament. Miller’s side rebounded from a mini 2-game skid with a fine performance over the weekend against USC, shooting better than 56% in the 81-67 triumph laying 6½ at home. This is the first of three consecutive road games for the Wildcats, but they’ll get a week off before heading to face Oregon State and Oregon. Arizona is 4-2 on the road in Pac-12 play this season (3-3 ATS).

Sun Devils 8th In Country Averaging 85 PPG

Arizona State is finishing a 4-game homestand with this matchup, winning the previous three and covering two. Hurley’s team will also make the Oregon swing next week, first in Eugene to play the Ducks followed by a trek to Corvallis to meet the Beavers. One of the nation’s top scoring units, the Sun Devils have been held under 72 points just once this season.

Neither team shot all that well in the first meeting, and the final still just fell short of a 163½ total. Expecting a little better marksmanship this time, my free college basketball pick will be on the ‘over.’
